4th
Sept 2008
Greetings from Duncan and the Team at Hele Park,
The Meet & Greet Evening
for new members who joined in 2008 has had
to be postponed until 12th October as all the
people involved are playing golf (including
me!). So, apologies to our newer members but
make sure you come along in October because
we have an excellent and fun evening lined
up for you.
The Captains' Away Day (weekend
if you want) is at Trethorne Golf Club on 18th
October. All members are invited to join Club
Captain Neil Vaughan for a fun day's golf and
meal on the Saturday (special prizes!) for £25
and the opportunity to stay overnight and play
again on Sunday morning. These away day/weekends
are r! elaxed and the golf is friendly. Sign
up on the notice board if you'd like to join
us.
Hele Park junior Ben Wilson won the Innis Trophy
at Downes Crediton with lowest gross of 71 in
a Devon County Juniors' Order of Merit competition
- beating some very good players from around
the county with much lower handicaps than him.
It's a well deserved win as Ben has strived
to improve his game with regular practice at
the Junior Academy nights and constant practice
on the course. He has changed all his equipment
this year and everything has been custom fitted
to his swing speed and ability - driver, irons,
wedges and putter - contributing to his handicap
dropping this year from 20 to 12 and even lower
after this win. Congratulations!
The Club held its first qualifier for the Devon
County Adult Junior Foursomes final at Portmore
at the end of the month. There was an excellent
entry and everyone had a great time.
It's always nice for the grown ups to have someone
half their size nailing long drives and chipping
in from 20 yards out! The winners on the day
were Phil! lip Steele and Jack Maddicks with
Jesus Lopez and Ben Wilson (on form still!),
both with 42 points. I wish them luck at Portmore.
Congratulations to Stuart
Disney who was runner up in the Devon Professionals'
Championship on Monday at the Warren Golf Club,
closely followed by Ben Martin who finished
5th which cost me another £5 note as
I was a little further down the list (note
to myself - must practice more!) - 36 holes
is too much for us older gentlemen!
I am away to Sunny Wales next week with the
real gentleman of the Club, the Seniors' Section
(well 16 of them). I will be armed with my camera
and for a small price can give you the low down
on what really goes on when boys are on tour!
Our juniors played the last South Devon League
match which was here on Sunday after being rained
off a couple of weeks ago. Congratulations to
winners of their groups - Ben Wilson (have you
heard of him?), James Cobb and Al! exis Lopez.

A Dream... And Two Teams
Matchplay is golf’s most competitive format
- pitting player against player - and that’s
why Samuel Ryder’s vision of a team event
pitting the best of America against the best
of Britain has evolved over eighty years into
the spectacle it is today – the Ryder Cup.
The 1st of the official Ryder Cup matches took
place in 1927 at the Worcester GC in Massachusetts,
with the US Team - captained by the infamous
Walter! Hagen - drubbing the much fancied team
from Great Britain 9.5 - 2.5, setting a dominant
trend that would last for the next 55 years.
In order to make the matches more competitive
the Europeans were added to the Great Britain & Ireland
team for the first time in 1979, and now the
tide has well and truly turned, with the US only
winning three of the last eleven meetings.
The composition of the teams has not been the
only thing to change over the years, as the structure
and the format of the event have evolved as well.
The matches originally included just foursomes
and singles matches, before the fourball format
w! as added in 1959. Now, we have four foursomes
and four fourballs on each of the first and second
days, with 12 singles matches being played on
the third and final day.
After three consecutive European victories (a
1st in the history of the event) the 2008 matches
head for the Valhalla GC in Louisville, Kentucky.
Each of the teams comprise
of 12 players, selected partly by virtue of
a points system - based on money winnings on
the respective PGA tours - and partly by the
captains, Nick Faldo (Europe) and Paul Azinger
(USA), who will have two and four “wildcard” picks
respectively.
If you’ve yet to try out the matchplay
format then line up some friends and give it
a go, it’s the most fun you can have on
a golf course! Feel free to pop into the shop
and I’ll be happy to explain the basic
structure, specific rules and – of cours!
e – the right etiquette to get you started.

RYDER CUP MAGIC MOMENT #1
1969 ROYAL BIRKDALE
The scores were all square in the 1969 Cup with
the final singles match coming down the 18th
hole.
After holing a four foot putt for par, Jack Nicklaus
conceded Tony Jacklin’s tricky two-footer
for a half with the enduring line: "I don't
think you would have missed that putt, Tony,
but in these circumstances I would never give
you the opportunity." The Ryder Cup was
shared for the first time in its history.
MATCHPLAY: WHAT’S
ALL THE FUSS?
Matchplay is not about the accumulation of strokes
over 18 holes. Each hole is an individual competition,
won by the lowest score. To win the match you
simply have to win more holes than your opponent!
Playing out of turn in Matchplay
is not merely considered ! bad etiquette as
in Strokeplay – your
opponent is entitled to ask you to replay the
shot.
Whereas in Strokeplay a breach of rules leads
to a two stroke penalty, in Matchplay the punishment
is the loss of the hole.
Your opponent can concede
a hole at any time. Likewise they can concede
a putt of any length – but
you aren’t allowed to ask!
An 18th Century Nobleman's Residence
Over the last couple of weeks
I’ve been
looking at Italy – and the Piedmont region
in the north in particular - as a realistic alternative
to a local golf getaway. Now I’ve got you
drooling over all the fantastic golf courses
that the area has to offer, we’re left
with the big question: where do we stay?
If you were to ‘google’ a small
town called Novi Ligure you would find a small
commune, equidistant from the three main cities
of the region – Milan, Turin & Genoa – which
is well known locally for its beauty, its wine
and its chocolate.
In the hills overlooking the town is an 18th
century nobleman’s residence, which had
fallen into a state of disrepute until its current
owner, Mr Paolo D’Amore, had it restored
and opened it to the public as an exclusive boutique
hotel.
As part of our travel focus we’ve managed
to arrange an exclusive Italian golf opportu!
nity for you, including golf at the courses mentioned
last week and a stay at Relais Villa Pomela.
The package, offered by Imagina Holidays, is
for five days and includes:
- Four rounds of golf at the courses
mentioned last week.
- Four night’s accommodation at Relais
Villa
Pomela.
- Breakfasts and dinners as per itinerary.
- Transfers to/from golf courses & airport.
- Transport, tickets & tour guide for
non-golfers as per itinerary.

and costs.
Ian Wright, Pro at West Linton GC tells us of
his Italian experience:
“If you are having
difficulty deciding on a golfing holiday then
a stay at the Villa Pomela has it all.
We stayed in a beautiful junior suite over!
looking the fountain and gardens. The restaurant
is superb and offered fresh local produce as
well as wines from their own vineyards.
We enjoyed unspoilt sunshine golf at the course
close by to the hotel and the local designer
village took shopping to a different level, we
were amazed to see the Italians queuing to go
into Prada, and Versace, to name a few.
Genoa, Portofino and Milan
are all a drive away and well worth visiting.
We can say from our own excellent family e!
xperience this hotel caters for all. This region
of Italy has much to offer and a stay at the
Villa Pomela completes the package”.
