An Introduction To Hele Park Golf Centre, Newton Abbot, Devon

16th May 2008

Hello from Duncan and the Team at Hele Park,

Captains' Drive Ins

We had a great turn out for the Captains' Drive Ins. Neil Vaughan (Captain), Gina Royffe (Lady Captain), Ann Pitman (Lady Vets'), Roy Bayliss (Seniors' Section) and Scott Jessop (Juniors' Section) are pictured with members behind to cheer them on. It was a good fun day and all members playing enjoyed a bacon bap compliments of the Captains. Congratulations to Lee Johnston winning with 24 points!

Arnold & Bristow Win Again!

Steve & I played at Dainton Park in the Devon Alliance last Thursday winning with a team score of 43 points. Steve (below) had an amazing day on the putting surface and it's the first round I've ever played with him where he hasn't lost a ball! Steve has a just purchased a new Callaway FT 3 wood with a Fijikura heavy shaft to fit his high swing speed, which upset the other pros on the day as he was hitting it further than their drivers. His son Jack caddied for me and I certainly enjoyed his company and help in reading the greens. Thanks Jack and Steve.

Seniors' Win At Okehampton

Congratulations to John Chapman, Alan Radford and David Wakefield (below from left to right) who won the Visitors' Team Prize in the Okehampton Seniors' Open with 75 points. All three have recently been custom fitted for new drivers so I'm pleased to see they're making a difference.

Mizuno Demo Evening

We had a very successful Demo Evening with Mizuno at the beginning of the week. Everyone enjoyed being put on the Trackman Launch Monitor which gave information about ball speed, spin ratio and tracked the ball from start to finish. With all this information we are able to guarantee the best shaft and loft for each individual. Favourite on the night was the MP600 driver with the movable weights to change the flight of the ball. It will not cure a slice or change the shape of the shot but can very effectively change the launch angle.

Callaway Demo Evening - Wednesday 30 April - 4-8pm

Our next demo day is with Callaway on Wednesday 30 April from 4-8pm. New to the Callaway range this season are the long awaited FT woods and Squareway woods, FT rescues, X Tour wedges and FT irons. All these and the new Big Bertha irons will be at the Demo Evening for everyone to come and try.

It must have been tough for Trevor Immelman during the final round of the Masters: you imagine having Tiger Woods chasing you at a Major! It’s no wonder then that he posted the highest final round score of a winner since Nicklaus’ 75 back in 1962.

Hundreds of miles away, in Mexico, at the Corona Championship, Lorena Ochoa claimed her fourth win in five starts. As if that wasn’t enough, Ochoa won by 11 strokes – enough to qualify her for the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame.

Seeing as it was her home country, thousands of spectators came to support Lorena, chanting, singing and cheering for her the entire way round. In fact Lorena said that she was thankful her putt on the 18th was a short one – by that time she was struggling to keep her emotions contained.

Congratulations to both of them – whether you’re being chased by the world’s best golfer, or your 11 strokes ahead, a cool demeanour and focus are absolutely necessary.

If you feel the pressure coming up the stretch, either with your social playing partners, or in a competition, chat to me and we’ll see if we can put a plan of action together.

From An Interview With Trevor Immelman After His Masters Win:

Q. Television said that you had got some kind of a message from Gary Player before the [final round]; was it a text message or voicemail and could you share with us what he said?

Trevor Immelman: Well, he left me a voicemail last night, and I got it when I was leaving the premises. You know, it gave me goosebumps because, you know, he told me that he unfortunately had to leave; he's on his way to the Middle East to do something over there, and that he wouldn't be able to watch the coverage, but told me that he believed in me and I need to believe in myself.

And he told me I've got to keep my head a little quieter when I putt (laughter) he said I'm just peaking too soon. He told me to just go out there and be strong through adversity, because he said that adversity would come today, and I just had to deal with it.

You know, I took that all to heart, and I'm obviously thankful for the message and I'm sure he's proud of me.

For those of you interested, I have a great promotion running at the moment where you can order a GolfLogix unit by clicking here. The Unit will be delivered to the shop where you can pick it up – no need to pay on line. GolfLogix is a handheld device that measures distances on golf courses, such as the distance of your last shot, the distance to the front, middle or back of the green, or even the distance from the fairway to the greenside water hazard.

What an overwhelming response we have had to our Fitting Survey. Across England, we have now had over 3000 responses. If you’re anything like me, you can’t wait to find out which golf manufacturer most UK golfers think is the leader in club fitting… OR why golfers choose not to get their clubs fitted. If you’re not apart of this great survey yet – click here as it only takes 30 seconds. AND one lucky entrant will win a fully custom fitted set of Mizuno Irons!

In this weeks newsletter I take a look at how golf ball compression has evolved over the years. Before you would have to have a higher swing speed if you used a soft compression ball in order to get maximum distance down the fairway; but not anymore. Now you can get a softer compression golf ball without having to compromise on distance.

We also take a further look at clothing technology and highlight a few ‘must haves’ for every golfer’s wardrobe. Keeping warm and dry has never been this comfortable. We all know how unpredictable the weather can be, so come take a look at a few of the jackets and waterproofs that we stock in the pro shop.

If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me or come into the pro shop for a chat. I would be more than happy to chat with you and give you some professional advice. You can also visit my website by clicking on the “tee off from your inbox” bar at the top of the newsletter or email me by clicking here.

A Low Compression Two Piece Golf Ball

When you picked up a sleeve of golf balls in the last century (I love saying that), you would often see the compression rating on the box. With ‘wound’ golf balls this was relevant, because it told you how soft the golf ball was relative to another.

It was also an indication of how much initial velocity you would launch the golf ball, depending upon your swing speed.

The softer the compression, the faster your swing speed would need to be to make maximum distance down the fairway.

That is no longer the case. Although a softer compression provides a softer feel, cover materials have advanced considerably further, contributing to a softer feel.

All these innovations have been great for the golfer who does not want to spend on a premium multi-layer golf ball.

For the golfer content to play with a 2-piece golf ball, there are now low compression golf balls with a much softer feel off the club face.

The Srixon AD-333 has become the best selling 2-piece golf ball on the back of its ability to combine both a softer lower compression feel with a lively response off the club face.

The new AD-333 has the same soft compression rating, but now adds increased energy transfer at contact to create a faster ball speed. The enhanced proprietary Pana-Tetra® blended cover provides a high launch angle and also improves the feel of this golf ball.

Srixon use a combination of materials and manufacturing techniques to deliver a softer compression golf ball that still delivers yards off the club face. The core in a Srixon golf ball is a softer material that still reacts with a high level of energy transfer with the level of softness graduated from the core outwards.

With all the focus in these articles on the softness of the core, you shouldn’t forget the role that the dimple design and layout will play in reducing drag and prolonging ball flight.
The new AD-333 aerodynamics features 6 different dimple sizes, larger dimple diameters and greater dimple surface area coverage to improve your ball flight.

Outewear - Technology Means Less

I would argue that you should apply the same thinking to clothing as you do to your club purchasing: think about combinations that will improve your game and give you the best value.

To help, I have provided in the grey block below a simple guideline to keeping a well stocked golf cupboard. Last week I suggested keeping some ‘classy’ cotton polo shirts, but also investing in ‘athletic’ shirts that can automatically manage your perspiration and protect you from UV rays.

With outerwear, it’s simple: keep warm, keep dry and make sure that you don’t restrict the movement of your swing.

The amount of ‘layered’ clothing that you keep is up to you, but make sure it is versatile.

For example – a Merino wool sweater with a water repellant lining is ideal for those ‘light drizzle’ days (they look smart too – see image below). These garments include breathable polyester and windblock laminate.

For our climate, a high quality thin (it could be sleeveless) waterproof polyester jacket is essential.

Even on a summer’s day, a strong, early morning gale is a time to be focusing on your shot making, and not your unprotected neck, or cold muscles.

Soft outer shells that have breathability, and are stretch woven don’t come with all outerwear products. I really would recommend that you don’t end up with a bulky jacket – they’re too hot, noisy and retrict your swing.

There are some full jackets that may look thin, but actually have several layers lining the inside of the garment. This means that on a cooler wet, windy day, there’s actually no need for a middle layer – your shirt and a good lightweight jacket will do the trick.

THE ‘WELL STOCKED’ GOLF CUPBOARD
There is a stock of clothing that you can invest in that will cover most of your on-course requirements through the year.
Summer is fast approaching, and in our climate ‘summer’ can mean any number of things. I’m sure many golfers will be
travelling over to Europe too.

Fully Fitted Without A Cost Barrier

If you are a golfer who wants to have a fully fitted set of quality golf clubs that are priced to offer exceptional value AND you don’t care who on any of the PGA Tours is playing them (remember somebody has to pay for that) then come on and see us in the shop.

The PGA Collection golf clubs were designed and created by PGA Professionals to ensure that every golfer could enjoy the benefit of customised golf clubs WITHOUT cost being a barrier.

Having your shaft length, shaft flex and kick point, lie angles and grip size made to match your golf game, WILL improve your golf, but, probably most importantly, it will improve how well you strike the golf ball.

And I am of the opinion that while we all look at the scorecard at the end of the round, our mind will always wander to the memories of all the perfectly hit shots in the round. It is those shots that give us the most enjoyment, irrespective of how many missed putts, poor bunker shots or bad course management decisions have scarred the card.

If you are interested in a custom fit set of clubs and do want maximum value then click here and book a fitting and a trial. See just how much more enjoyment you can have.

NIKE BALL FACTS:

POWER TRANSFER TECHNOLOGY?

Because of the bigger face of your Driver, energy transfer between club & ball is optimum when using your Driver. However, the thick Polymer located inside the mantle layer of the NIKE ONE ball increases ball speed and generates enough power and energy to ensure enhanced distance for a wider range of clubs in the bag. NOT JUST THE DRIVER!

THE DRYJOYS PERFORMANCE LIGHT RANGE

We may be into April, but there is still the weather to think about. Sporting an athletic design and tailored ‘cut and fit’ the DryJoys Performance Light Range from FootJoy allows you to swing with ease. The velcro sleeve cuffs and multiple waterproof stretch panels within the garment mean you can forget about the elements and concentrate on other things, like that slippery five footer for par...
