An Introduction To Hele Park Golf Centre, Newton Abbot, Devon

13th June 2008

Hello from Duncan and the Team at Hele Park,

At last, a weekend with sun, (ignore the rain on Saturday afternoon) but Sunday was a scorcher! Let's hope it continues.

How would you like to look as good as Tiger? This week we have a great prize for any of you who can remember what brand of clothing finished in the top three spots in the first major of the year, The Masters. I will even give you a clue - the company in question rhymes with Mike. Click here to email me your answer, and I will enter you into the draw.

Hele Park - Custom Fitting Kings

With even more custom fitting success stories recently I am very proud that the golf companies are also recognising our achievements. I know my mantra of Custom Fit is Best might seem like propaganda, but the results speak for themselves. 80% of our club sales now involve club fitting. You, the customer get the benefit of having each club personalised, giving you the confidence you need on the course. Callaway, Cobra, Mizuno and Wilson are now offering a FREE club if you buy more than 8 custom fitted clubs.

Yes, there is a charge of £25 to have your clubs custom fitted. It’s money well spent if it means you get the right clubs the first time, saving money and many wasted hours of

frustration. If you buy clubs from us after the fitting you will receive a £25 voucher to spend in the Pro's Shop - meaning your custom fitting session is FREE. That's got to be a good deal. It takes just 30 minutes to fit you for an individual wood and up to 1 hour for a full set of clubs. What have you got to lose? Ring to book an appointment.

Every Day Is A Demo Day At Hele Park

There are fewer Demo Days on our calendar this year as companies are less keen with talk of the credit crunch. But every day can be a Demo Day at Hele Park as we stock more than 250 demo clubs for you to try. With our fabulous new Club Room we now have more space and time to give you, the customer, as you choose the clubs you want. Take advantage of the opportunity to see and try the amazing range and choice we have in stock and test them out on the driving range.

ACADEMY DATES - 4 week courses - £39.99

Stage 2 - Improvers - Tuesday 17th June at 7pm

For those who want to progress from Stage 1. This course builds your confidence on the course, covering everything from tee shots to the short game. All equipment provided. Click here to book for Stage 2.

Not So Big Phil.....

After several months of hard dieting, with hardly a pint of lager to tide him over, Past Captain Phil Steele has lost 2 stone 2lb to raise money for the Captains' Charities which are BIBIC (British Institute for Brain Injured Children) and the Alzheimer's Society. Those who were kind enough to sponsor him, guess what? It's time to pay!

Win A Replica Of Tiger’s Final Day ‘US Open’ Outfit

If you can answer the question that follows, then you will be entered into a national competition where you have the chance to win the outfit that Tiger wears on the final day of the US Open, including cap, shirt, trousers, glove, belt and shoes. The question is: “Which golf brand came 1st, 2nd & 3rd at the first Major of 2008?”

Click here to send me a mail with your name, contact number and answer and you could be walking around in a replica of Tiger’s final day outfit.

This week I take a look at the clothing technology available that ensures we are comfortable while playing in all temperatures. I also continue my discussion on the importance of choosing the putter design that is right for you. For the lower handicap golfers read my article on “Players’ Irons” and how they can help you improve control over your shots. Come and have a look in my shop to see what I have available.

Regards,

The Hele Park Team

Don't Just Look At The Brand Name

We all agree that once the humidity is up - creating close, heavy playing conditions – then being patient and focusing on saving a par from out of the rough is more difficult than usual.

But will the excess moisture on your skin or the temperature on the inside of your golf shirt affect your round this summer?

Compare an intelligent, synthetic fabric that gets rid of perspiration, and in the process, cools your body down to a thick cotton shirt where the fabric is not porous, and where the fibres do not automatically help 18 holes worth of body moisture to evaporate.

Now put yourself back into the rough in the middle of July, trying to save that par: an air-conditioned body temperature, together with a fabric that isn’t clinging to your skin IS going to make a difference to your score and your ability to consistently score for all 18.

After reading about what the fabric technology in some of these summer shirts can do for your comfort and performance, I hope that you appreciate that my choice in golf shirts this summer:

- Is not about brand – it’s the technology behind the brand
- Is intended to offer you the chance to move away from wet and clinging clothes: when the humidity and heat gets up, you want a loose fit that actively promotes increased air flow and keeps you dry.

AN EXAMPLE OF HOW FABRIC SHOULD BE DOING ITS JOB FOR YOU

NIKE SPHERE DRY fabrics are structured in a 3D pattern (see picture right). The 3D structure allows a massively increased airflow and circulation on your skin’s surface. This keeps you cool (the process of air being able to move over moisture on your skin provides a cooling effect), but the extra space also prevents the fabric from clinging to your skin.

In fact the SPHERE REACT DRY fabric is relatively smooth until it detects moisture. At this point the 3D structure becomes much more pronounced, allowing more air flow across the skin. Once the sweat has evaporated, the fabric returns to a flat structure.

Of course, all of the NIKE Summer Shirt fabrics are multilayered. Hydrophobic fibres on the layer closest to your skin siphon water away from your skin and transport the water to the outside layer of fabric where the moisture is evenly distributed for effective evaporation.

'Putting' Design First

When you’re next on the green with your playing partners, notice that each one of them has a different stance and a different setup when Putting.

The way the knees are bent, their posture, the way the golfer stands over the ball, will all affect their stroke, swing, angle of attack (which affects the backspin) and where on the Putter face they are likely to strike the ball. These characteristics will all impact on the design of club they need (which might not actually be what they are playing with!).

Every golfer has a unique Putting style and setup and without being correctly fitted for a Putter, your Putting will never be as good as it could be! Come talk to me about selecting the best Putter design for your game or click the Putter image to book a fitting. Click here to book a Fitting.

Which Design Is Best For You?

For golfers struggling to consistently hit the ball out the centre of the Putter face or generating too much backspin, the Full Mallet design is best. Firstly by having the weight and the CoG further back, the Putter’s head will remain more stable on off-centre shots; secondly the deep CoG promotes reduced backspin; promoting forward role, improved distance control and greater accuracy.

For golfers requiring the best combination of ‘feel’ and ‘forgiveness’, the Half Mallet Option is best. Weight is not spread as far back as a Full Mallet; however stability is still high to assist in keeping the ball online on off-centre putts. The compact head provides good control and added confidence over a blade.

For golfers requiring the ultimate in ‘feel’, ‘responsiveness’ and traditional putter looks, the Blade option is best. The Blade option is easier to control; especially on those faster greens. The blade Putter however is not as stable on off-centre putts. Golfers with a consistent putting stroke and lower backspin rates will suit this design best.

Stepping Up To Greater Performance

If you are playing off a single figure handicap or on the edge of single figures; striving to consistently break 80 then you need to consider a set of ‘Players Irons’.

If you started with Irons that had Super-Size heads, thick top lines and soles and deep undercut cavities, then those clubs will create a very consistent shot shape, but as you need to shoot lower scores you need greater control over your shot making.

As a better player you should be aspiring to work the ball better – can you imagine being stuck in the trees on the 18th, 150 yards out, and being able to hit a low shot that shoots out low under the branches, then suddenly rises up, fades 50 yards to the right and lands right next to the hole! WOW!

With Player’s Irons, as well as increased control you will also experience increased ‘feel’ off the clubface. For the Touring Pros feel is their #1 priority, but before you dash off and try out the latest forged blades come and talk to me about your game. Let’s work out your #1 priority and select a set that delivers the best results for your game. Click here to book a session with me.

WHAT ARE THE ATTRIBUTES OF A PLAYER’S IRON?
Thin top-line, narrow sole, minimal offset, small cavity back and a Centre of Gravity closer to the face and higher up than game improvement Irons.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A PLAYER’S IRON?
By having a narrow sole, you will experience less turf interaction and the ability to crisply strike and work the ball from almost any lie. The thin top-line means the CoG is closer to the face and higher up, creating a penetrating ball flight and increased ball workability.

Before; offset helped square the clubface at impact, but as your skill level has increased, offset is no longer needed as you now naturally release the clubhead and looking down from above you will experience added confidence to work the ball as you wish with the belief that you are in control.

MIZUNO MP-57 AND MP-67 PLAYERS IRONS
The MP-67 Irons feature a Forged, Cut Muscle Design with the CoG specifically placed closer and higher up the face for improved workability, trajectory control and responsiveness. With a smaller sweet spot, the Sub-5 handicap players will really enjoy these Irons.

For low handicap golfers wanting to take their game to the next level, the Forged MP-57 Irons feature a large cavity design for greater head stability on off-centre shots. Featuring progressive offset and sole width, the longer Irons are easier to hit while mid-short range Irons offer greater versatility and ‘feel’.
