An Introduction To Hele Park Golf Centre, Newton Abbot, Devon

15th Feb 2008

Hello from the Team at Hele Park

What a weekend. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and England won a rugby match! Joking apart, it was great to see so many of you taking advantage of the good weather going out on the course. Well done to Peter Read who tried the new Cobra baffler and was so impressed he actually bought one (I don't believe it!). For those who don't know Peter, look at the picture below and you'll see the resemblance!

I know I keep going on and on about bafflers and rescue clubs but they are so much easier than fairway woods and long irons. If you haven't tried one, please come and have a go with one of my many demo clubs. On the topic of demos, Nike is launching the new Sumo range on Saturday - you may have seen the posters around the Centre. This is not a Demo Day but is the launch day of the Sumo range and we will have a great range of Sumo demo clubs for you to try! The new Sumo square and round driver and square rescue and fairway woods are good enough for a certain TIGER so come along and have a go. NIKE is a new addition to our vast range of clubs and I'm sure you will enjoy using them.

Hele Park Golf Club is pleased to welcomes another two new members for 2008 - Ken Weetman and Alan Aughton. Ken has been living in Spain until recently and played a fair bit of warm weather golf over there. Alan is now ready to get his handicap. I'm sure Hele Park members will welcome them into the fold.

Anyone else interested in joining the Club please contact the office or go to www.heleparkgolf.co.uk.

New stock continues to arrive in the shop with many companies launching new models. New in this week is the new range of Footjoy shoes. The Reel Fits with Boa technology and Dry Joys with Pod technology help maintain balance through out your swing. You would be amazed at how much pressure is put on your feet during the golf swing. There is more to read below about how your shoes work and affect your game and how important it is to have the correct fit for shoes.

It has been great to see so many junior members at our classes on Friday evenings between 6-8pm, as well as the Junior Academies which run for member and non-member juniors between 9am and 2pm each Saturday. They are keen, flexible and a joy to teach. One of our stars of the future is young member Alexis Lopez who has just started playing with Wilson DI6s. These are great clubs at an amazingly low price of £229 instead of their normal £329 and can be fitted to your swing and shape. Alexis had his made 1/2 inch shorter and 2 degrees flat so look out for him in the winner board soon. Anyone wishing to try the Wilson DI6s or be custom fitted for any clubs, just Click Here.

I played at in the Devon PGA medal at Saunton but there's nothing good to report. The bad putting was back but I scrambled a few points to improve my Order of Merit position. The Alliance this week is at Wrangaton and Malcolm is trying to talk me into using one of his belly putters (desperate times!)

This week I discuss the importance of comfort for your feet and give you some advice on how to make sure the golf shoes you buy really fit. I also look at how investing in a golf cart could save you from damage to your back, knees and hips later. It is time for you to consider how you transport your clubs around the course. Remember I am here to help you with all your golfing needs, so pop into the shop any time.

Let's hope the good weather lasts and I get to see you all enjoying some golf at Hele Park.

Regards,
The Team at Hele Park

The Pressure On Your Feet

You know a correct takeaway, with a good shoulder turn, leading to the desired position at the top, and a correctly ‘loaded’ swing, and you’ll generate your maximum club head speed with good control. Now, satisfied that you’ve boomed a drive down the middle you can take-off down the fairway ready for an approach shot at the green. Noticed your feet yet? That could be the key to understanding whether you are using your body correctly through the swing.

FootJoy, as you would expect from an authentic GOLF shoe company, are highly concerned with the pressures that your feet are going to take as you load up and generate power through your swing. They know that what you should be looking for is the following sequence:

At address the pressure on your feet is pretty evenly distributed throughout both golf shoes although there should be slightly more pressure on the medial sides (inside) of the shoe.

Takeaway then begins to shift weight from the left foot to the right, and you should feel the right foot begin to brace on the lateral side (outside) especially in the region of the mid-foot to heel.

At the top of the swing you should be coiled with slight pressure on the medial side of the left foot, while the lateral side of the right foot carries the majority of the pressure just prior to you unleashing your power and making the transition of weight back to the left side.

As the club head accelerates through the impact zone your weight will be positioned prominently on the left foot, especially the lateral side (outside). That foot now prepares to withstand the brunt of the force behind the swing and the power you have generated. The power you are generating will now carry the club head into the follow through, which, if you extend it correctly, will place the weight almost completely on the left foot, except for medium pressure that is applied to the toe of the right foot to help balance.

That load on your feet - you will notice that the force generated through the swing will actually cause the lateral side of the left foot to roll slightly - requires a pair of golf shoes, which as well as being designed for the job, fit as perfectly as possible.

Spend the time in the shop, letting us put you in the best fitting shoes possible. You will notice a difference, especially when you are looking for that extra yard or your stance is under that extra pressure. That will translate into an improvement in your ball striking.

FootJoy ReelFit™ are designed to be the ultimate in custom fit shoes allowing you to make adjustments to achieve perfection.

My Last Winter Tip: Think About Your 'Wheels'

Over the last five weeks I’ve been highlighting ways to make golf in the Winter easier. The two main points I made were: make sure you stretch, warming up before your round, and secondly, keep dry and warm.

It is a no-brainer that being more comfortable on the course is going to improve your enjoyment and your result.

My last ‘winter tip’ then is make sure that you’re comfortable transporting golf clubs, rainwear, thermals, balls, gloves, tees, etc. over 18 wet and cold holes.

Deciding on a carry-bag, cart-bag, electric trolley, or even a buggy is up to you – you know the pros and the cons.

What I can say though, is that I see far too many golfers who don’t consider how they are transporting their clubs – they’ve done it the same way for years!

15% of golfers experience problems with their back, knees or hips. How many could alleviate these problems very quickly by investing in a cart?

How many of these golfers are actually causing these problems from years of straining their joints unnecessarily?

Remember that I am here to give you advice on how to get more enjoyment out of your game.

If you haven’t already done it this winter, next winter put a new fleece and waterproof jacket combo to the test; get a pair of shoes with a waterproof membrane, and re-grip those clubs! You’ll enjoy your game so much more.

WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT AN ELECTRIC TROLLEY:

It needs to have a lightweight chassis as you
need to lift it in and out of the car

You don’t want to hear the motor

You’re after wheels that are puncture proof,
don’t mess the course up and come off
easily for storage

You want an ‘all terrain’ option – consider
those windy, wet days in the rough!

The Powakaddy Freeway Titanium goes from stowed to fully functional in two simple actions.
Because of the hi-tech alloy chassis it’s one of the strongest, yet lightest electric trolleys on the market. It fits into small boots, but the wide wheel base is built for hilly, rough courses.
