An Introduction To Hele Park Golf Centre, Newton Abbot, Devon

15th August 2008

Greetings from Duncan and the Team at Hele Park,

Demo Day
Monday 18th August - 3-7pm
Padraig Harrington has won another major with Wilson Clubs. No sooner than Wilson get the publicity stuff out for their 60th major win which was Padraig at the Open, then Padraig pops up and does it again in the PGA Open at Oakland Hills, making him only the fourth pla! yer to win both in the same year. Fantastic! It must tell you something about the clubs so why not come along and try them.

To celebrate Padraig's win at the Open, making it Wilson's 60th major championship win, Wilson are making a very special offer. Buy one FYbrid and get the second one at an amazing 60% off. Hey, I'm all heart and way ahead of Wilson's publicity machine, I'll make it 61%!

Tour Edge
As well as the amazing Wilson clubs on demo on Monday, we have Tour Edge as well. I think it's even better when you can try your own clubs against another brand, or in this case two other brands.

I use a Tour Edge driver and it does a great job of keeping me straight. I'm quite good at long, straight was the difficult bit. Tour Edge have found the answer for me, could they be the answer for you?

Juniors' Open 2008
It was great to see so many juniors from different clubs on Monday. The handicap range went from 2 to 54, playing 9 and 18 hole competitions split into different divisions. Star of the day was George Horsham. George is a member at Hele Park and! the Warren and plays off 11. His front 9 was an amazing gross 33 with Andy Steele (10) of Hele Park and Lauren Pearce (7) of Exeter just behind with gross 34. However, George kept up the pressure to win the Wilsworthy Trophy with the Lowest Gross of 71.

The PGA Golfers Blog – Have Your Say
Recent changes in the PGA rules and regulations have allowed for drivers with interchangeable shafts to be manufactured and sold. Changing the shaft on the course is still illegal, however amateur golfers are now able to change their shaft before or between their rounds. Do you own one of these drivers or know of anyone who does? And has this made an impact on your game or theirs? Click Here to read the full article, have your say, and see what other golfers have said.

I’ve Updated My Website
The functionality on my website has been updates to provide you with a more enjoyable, and easier experience. I personally think the equipment catalogue is now as good as anything in the world. Links to some of the interactive features, as well as contacting me about Custom Fittings and quotes is also more accessible.

This week I’d like to ask you a question: Would you rather play in the golfing attire of old with today’s clubs; or with the clubs of yesteryear in today’s modern clothing? Have a look at my article on the advances in clothing technology, and tell me what you think. I also have a look at how modern putter technology has helped improved the amateur golfer’s game, and how it can work for you. Remember that as your professional I am here to help you with all aspects of your game, so feel free to come and chat to me if you want to ! see your game improve.

Regards,
Duncan

Does Clothing Make It Easier: Answer My Poll

Here’s the choice: Play eighteen holes in modern apparel with wooden clubs or play with modern clubs whilst wearing a heavyset suit & tie? Let me know which you would prefer by clicking here.

Golf wear is unrecognizable today compared to a hundred years ago – which is more than I can say for clubs - so isn’t it odd that when we think of all of golf’s advances over the years that clothing doesn’t immediately spring to mind?

In the late 60’s, new fabrics were introduced that allowed golfers greater swing freedom, but even they fell far short of the complete ‘solutions’ offered by today’s manufacturers.

Modern ‘performance’ fabrics are effectively ‘alloys’ of different fibers, meshed together to create a f! ar lighter, durable and more elastic product. They offer exceptional breathability, UV protection, water repellency, stain resistance, and even anti-curl collars.
The timeline above also shows styles have evolved (although some would argue that Arnold Palmer was ahead of his time) over the years.

The new Nike Collection includes the collarless ’performance mock’ (as modeled by Tiger above) which is just one of the shirts in the range made from Dri-FIT material, a microfiber weave that actually ‘breathes’ by wicking sweat away from the skin.

Fortunately for all of us, golf technology is not the only thing to have evolved over the last hundred years; so has civilization. The Nike Collection leads the way into the future by offering dedicated clothing ranges designed specifically for female golfers, which is certainly something we wouldn’t have seen one hundred years ago.

Technology, Fitting Or Technique

Most of us ignore the promises made by glossy adverts. Especially those promising ‘hitting zones’, ‘highest MOI’ and ‘deepest, lowest CoG’. But don’t think that modern design can’t improve your golf game.

Have you compared your performance with a Putter from a decade ago to your performance with a Putter designed and manufactured in the last 12 months? There have been three advances that will benefit your game on the Putting green:

The biggest bonus for most amateur golfers is highly visible – alignment aids. If you suffer from poor alignment and miss your putts through a poor aim, then look for a new Putter that has more than a simple ‘stripe’ on the top of the head to aid alignment.

Many Putters now have a head design that ‘highlights the lines of alignment’ to make lining up your Putter, to hit your point of aim, very easy

If you struggle with your ‘roll’ and too often the ball skids off the club face then there is technology in some Putter faces that will ‘grip’ the ball and then set it rolling with top spin ensuring a truer roll. That keeps your Putt on line.

Finally, especially on longer Putts, too many golfers struggle to get the ‘distance’ right. Often that’s because they don’t strike the ball consistently on the sweet spot and don’t get the distance they were expecting. Unfortunately you can’t make the sweet spot bigger BUT some Putters reduce the loss of distance from impact either side of the sweet spot. I won’t bore you with the ‘marketing speak’ but the technology works.

However, before you buy a new Putter in the search for strokes off the handicap, the first thing I would do is come along and have an assessment. Have a Putting lesson and we can quickly see where the most improvement can be gained in the shortest time. Possibly you have invested in a new Putter but you are not getting the results because it doesn’t ‘fit’ you, forcing you into a poor address position, making a good stroke impossible. Then again, given that most golfers think that Putting is something that should be natural and avoid any coaching on the subject, possibly your Putting stroke could be improved.

What part of your game do you want to improve? Are you going to believe an advert or would you like to come through and chat to me. Call me in the shop or click here to mail me and let me see whether you need improved technology, a fitting adjustment or some simple technique improvements.

Mizuno Hybrid Fit Technology

Mizuno have unleashed yet another Custom Fit weapon which is said to not only enhance your game but also shed light on the best combination of clubs to own. Everyone has heard of Custom Fitting clubs to individual needs - such as altering lie angle, shaft length and flex - but now with the new hybrid fit technology it is possible to make decisions on whether or not standard irons or hybrids are the way to go for your transition zone (between 3 wood and 5 iron). The Mizuno Hybrid Custom Fit process is similar to that of standard fitting except shots are hit with Mizuno's Hybrid Fit Tool.

T! he Tool is used in conjunction with our Vector Pro radar system to measure both angle of approach (steep or shallow) and club head velocity (mph). The resulting figures from Vector Pro and the strike tape on the bottom of the Hybrid Fit Tool are then compared to Mizuno's optimum performance charts leading to the correct combination of clubs to fill the transition zone. Come along and see me in the Club Room and I'll show you how great it is.
