Greetings from Duncan,
Juniors’ Basil
Steer Trophy
Congratulations to our fabulous team of Scott
Jessop, Sam Wallace & Andy Steele on reaching
the final at Wrangaton last Sunday, the first
time Hele Park has been in the final. Unfortunately
they were up against an amazing team in Honiton
who were gunning for a second win in 3 years
and their experience won through. Thanks to
Wrangaton for hosting the final, the course
was brilliant. It was great fun on the day
for the supporters and matches were played
in great spirit as both sides clapped and cheered
fantastic shots from each team. A special thank
you to long serving Juniors’ Section
organiser John Feltham for the amazing amount
of time he gives to the boys.
Super Stu – Yet
Again!
Congratulations from everyone at Hele Park on
Stuart Disney’s latest achievement. Stu
is the first British based Pro (the second
in the world!) to achieve, through continuing
professional development, the PGA Advanced
Diploma giving him Advanced PGA Professional
status. This covers golf swing, business management,
marketing and competitive advantage, sports
science, diet and nutrition and business analysis.
No mean feat.
Stu has spent 5 years’ studying
and is a specialist in every area of the game.
Looking into the future, Stu intends to advance
his career by developing plans for Golf Coaching
and Player Development, as well as completing
his book on golf instruction. We are all very
lucky to have such a skilled professional at
Hele Park.
Super Senior – Alan
Radford
Alan Radford impressed us all with a great win
at Thurlestone last week in the Seniors’ Open
competition. There was a large field of 156
players and Alan’s fantastic 43 points
was enough to bring home a wonderful prize,
as well as give him a handicap cut from 18
to 16 just before we go to France – unlucky!
I talk this week about the
changes in golf ball and club face technology
and the impact they can have on your game.
It is amazing the difference today’s
balls and club heads have made, even in the
last 10 years. We can demonstrate this very
easily on our Vector Launch monitor. This week
we are offering free ball fitting to everyone
and the first 12 people who email to book a
fitting will receive a free ball to suit their
game. Click here to book a free ball fitting.
Have a good week.
Best wishes,
Duncan

SPECIAL Q-LINK OFFER
A
special offer this week is the opportunity to
buy a Q-Link pendant with a free Q-Link Q-Klip
worth £37.50. Ben Martin, who plays off
3, says, ‘I was allowing my golf to become
a stressful experience and realised that if I
wanted to continue my dream of becoming a professional
golfer I would have to curb this. Luckily I was
introduced to the Q-Link pendant and the change
has been amazing. It took a few days before I
could notice the difference and the effect has
gradually increased. I no longer carry a bad
shot forward to the next one, Q-Link seems to
allow me to take each shot as it comes. When
I heard that Justin Rose wears one I thought
it was worth a try and now I wouldn’t be
without it. I think it carries over into every
part of my life.’
MEET & GREET
EVENING
This proved to be a great evening for new and
old, or should I say established members. The
evening gave new members an opportunity to
ask all the questions they needed – how
to get a handicap, that sort of thing – as
well as meet others to play with on the course.
To set the evening in motion Club Captain Phil
Steele gave a brief talk (his speeches are
always short, good man). Simon and Stu took
everyone onto the range and Stu showed them
a few tricks of the trade whilst Simon gave
a basic introduction to simple exercises to
improve your game and nutrition information
when playing. I’m pleased to say Ann
Pitman paid attention and has taken the pre-game
routine on board saying she will now have a
glass of wine prior to play as well as after.
NEW GIRL ON THE BLOCK
It was great to see Teresa Metters win the Ladies’ September
Medal and LGU Pendant last weekend. Teresa only
really got into golf when she joined us on the
tuition trip to Portugal in February earlier
this year. She showed promise right away and
benefited hugely from the week and felt confident
enough to join Hele Park Golf Club on her return.
Although she has to fit her golf around her work
and family, Teresa has played as often she can.
The signs of a big drop were imminent earlier
in the week when she joined the ladies at the
Lady Captain’s Away Day at Tiverton scoring
36 points to take the first prize. Teresa is
joining us again in February of 2008 as we visit
Islantilla in Spain. After another week’s
tuition with Stuart and me, I’ll put money
on her dropping her handicap to 28 before next
season is over.
GETTING HIGH:
IT’S
GOOD FOR YOUR GOLF
Men in white coats are now recommending we get
high. Higher than we’ve ever gone before
with their latest products.
Don’t start sniffing your golf ball but
do make sure you get as “high as the proverbial
kite” off the Tee. You need to add at least
5° of launch angle on your tee shots with
the golf balls of 2007, when compared to those
you used in 1997. And if your swing speed isn’t
aggressive, then you need to launch higher still.
Today’s golf ball needs to go to a much
higher elevation than the older golf balls, to
spin less than the older golf balls and then
carry further. The spin rate and aerodynamic
design is important to make the golf ball ‘hang’ for
as long as possible, with forward momentum, before
it starts the descent.
Each of the better manufacturers will also produce
premium golf balls that can deliver you the best
launch conditions and greatest distance from
the tee box whilst also offering increased spin
rate and greater control with the shorter irons
AND superior feel around the green with your
Wedge Putter. But, those come at a price.
These manufacturers also offer less expensive
alternatives. Most will have a 2pce alternative
that will make compromises between Driver distance,
spin rate on approach or feel around the green.
Srixon, ever the golf ball innovators, introduced
the Srixon Tri-Speed. This is actually a less
expensive 3pce golf ball. This golf ball will
provide you with superb distance AND sensational
feel.
DON’T
CARRY BAGGAGE ONTO THE COURSE
So how do you clear your mind of all the day
to day clutter as you arrive at the club? Do
you find yourself still trying to put the world,
or at least the business or bank manager, to
rights in your mind as you scramble to make
the 1st Tee?
You don’t need me to tell you that your
chances of settling into a sensible pre-shot
routine, as you set up to play the first shot,
are now remote. And you don’t need me to
predict the likely result.
In fact do you know that
most golfers’ minds
become cleared as they get to about the 6th?
At that point they are either experiencing the
elation of playing this beautiful game or they
are so angry about how they’re playing
that they’ve forgotten the world, the business
and the bank manager.
How many of you can I reach when I ask that
you make a resolution and allow yourself the
time to clear your mind of the baggage before
you even start to get changed before your golf.
That baggage will interfere
with your state of relaxation and then your
subconscious mind’s
ability to visualise, concentrate and focus.
If your subconscious mind can’t do these
things then it will allow negative thoughts to
dominate your game.
And while you think about
your subconscious mind please note that your
subconscious mind knows how to swing the golf
club just like it knows how to drive a car.
It’s all the
conscious thoughts and stress that get in the
way of how effectively you drive your car or
hit that first tee shot.
Over 350 of the world’s top golfers use
Q-Link’s unique technology SRT™ (Sympathetic
Resonance Technology) to give them the competitive
edge and over 130 PGA tournaments have been won
by Q-Link wearers.
A recent customer survey
further re-iterated Q-Link’s exciting
claims as 88% of golfers reported improvements
on their short game and 54% had lowered their
handicap by an average of 3 shots since wearing
a Q-Link.
