Oct 2007
Greetings from Duncan,
Congratulations to our Mixed Pairs Matchplay
winners Irene Berry and Alan Radford over Ian
and Olga Lidbury.
Stuart and I ventured out
as a team to the Devon PGA Fourball Championship
at Bovey Castle. After a good start the putts
stopped dropping on the back 9 but a few errors
around the green cost us dearly. We finished
a very creditable 2 under but just outside
the money with the winners finishing 4 under.
A story of what might have been…..
Dougherty winning again on the European Tour
last weekend but the really great news is that
the top 5 places went British players - Nick
Dougherty, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Barry Lane
and Paul Lawrie. This has got to be good news
for the future of British golf and bodes well
for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Cheap Deal?
Beware the dangers of buying
from the internet. Below is a picture of a ‘Callaway’ Driver
purchased by a local golfer through the internet.
Two things are wrong with it. One is that it
is a fake – a Callaway it ain’t!
Number 2 is fairly obvious – it’s
broken after only a couple of games. Make sure
you buy your clubs from a PGA Professional and
you can be sure of getting the genuine article
at a very good price.
We will assess your swing and ability and can
custom fit you for any make of club. Click here

In this week’s mail I have a look at how
the designers of golf wear have combined functionality
with fashion, resulting in practical clothes
that look fantastic too. I also give some practical
advice on what a golfer should be eating to keep
energy levels stable throughout your game. Eating
properly will help your performance on the golf
course, so take a minute to consider your food
choices. Now that our rainy season has started,
you might be looking for a light, easy to carry
bag, as an alternative to the trolley you use
in summer. I discuss what Strata has to offer.
Remember I am here to give you advice on ALL
aspects of your game, so come and have a chat
with me and let’s get you playing your
best golf ever!
Best wishes,
Duncan
Golf Nutrition By Doc Martin
Good nutrition and fitness are becoming more
recognised as being important in the game of
golf. Both help achieve and sustain a good performance.
When playing golf you need a slow release energy
source. Golfers should avoid starchy foods like
potatoes, white breads, corn, and foods high
in sugars. These can serve to make you groggy
and less able to react properly. They will rob
you of stamina rather than enhance it.
Two things to stay away from are alcohol and
caffeine. Save the alcohol for the 19th hole.
Caffeine over stimulates your muscles and increases
your heart rate. This can cause you to lose control
and be less able to sustain concentration. Chocolate
bars are similar, they give a fast release sugar
rush affecting you in the same way as caffeine.
Ideally you should drink a lot of water and
eat fruit such as apples and bananas and also
now you can buy a variety of oat snacks, which
will also provide slow release energy.
Children In Need - 6 Weeks To Go
I am going to be supporting
Children in Need this year and you will be
able to purchase 10 range balls for £1 which will be donated
to Children in Need. Anyone who chips in 3 or
more balls in our special Children in Need target
will be invited back for the Grand Final on Saturday
10 November. It should be good fun and I have
a great prize in mind. Watch this space…..
We teach nearly 80 juniors
each Saturday. Any junior in our Academies
on 10 November who comes in fancy dress will
have £2 off their £4
fee donated to the Children in Need cause. There
will be a special prize for the best fancy dress
in each Academy on that day. Parents can also
join in the fancy dress competition and the one
we judge to be the most fun will receive a very
special prize.
Functional Fashion
So often, in life, function
and fashion just don’t go hand in hand. Fishing waders,
for example, or the Russian ushanka…..
But somehow wet weather wear designers have
managed to bridge the gap by creating golfing
outerwear that is not only incredibly practical,
but highly fashionable as well.
To start with, these designers borrowed a number
of features from traditional outdoor wear and
trendy ski wear, like the tall, padded storm
collar (to keep wind and water off your neck),
storm flaps over the zips and pockets (to ensure
these stay dry) and elasticised cuffs. Golf wear
manufacturers then added to these a number of
features designed to accommodate some of the
challenges unique to golfing.
The GT GORE-TEX Tourlite Convertible Weatherbeater
from Sunderland
features a Drop-tail “Golfers” Hem
with Twin Shock Cord Adjustment, a storm collar,
half zip in Front to reduce bulk and a concealed
zip score card pocket.
It also converts to a half sleeve, which is perfect
for those Autumn days.
For example, many jackets feature a dropped
rear hem, often referred to as a ‘golfer’s
cut’, which ensures the small of your back
stays warm and dry all through your swing and
while putting.
Many also have adjustable straps on the cuffs,
allowing you to alter the width of the sleeves
to fit your wrists. Which means no excess fabric
to get in the way of your hands.
Adjustable cuffs and waist adjusters also help
to reduce the bulk of the jacket by tidying up
excess fabric. The result? Less interference
on your swing and a trim set up at address. And
of course, being able to tailor the jacket to
your exact dimensions helps to seal you against
the weather.
Waterproof trousers have
also been designed with the golfer in mind.
You’ll notice
the legs are longer than the usual pant-leg length,
in order to cover your trousers and the collar
of your golf shoe. Many also have an ‘articulated
knee’ where the material has been cut and
sewn in such a way as to have a bit more ‘give’ in
the knees.
It’s good to know that outer wear designers
have worried over these little details so that
you don’t have to.
So what happens when smart
fabrics meets smart design? Well, you get some
of the most innovative garments on the market.
Garments that are designed to enhance your
playing experience – no
matter the weather. With modern wet wear you
don’t have to choose between fashion and
function – you can have it all.
Food For Thought
Most professional athletes or sports personalities
all follow a specific diet plan to keep them
healthy, fit and to boost their energy levels
in order to perform at their best. Naturally
we should all be following a healthy diet for
different areas of life. A high powered diet
that is designed to sustain high energy levels
and strength can be very valuable to a golfer,
especially on the back nine.
Before you think ‘diet’ and
groan let me assure you that eating right to
help your golf is very similar to following
a healthy diet plan in general. As with any
healthy diet plan avoiding starch (potatoes,
corn, white bread and food with high sugar
content) is a better choice. Starch tends to
rob you of stamina and can make you sleepy
so your reactions will be slow.
Food you should include in your diet should
be low in fat. It should contain small portions
of lean protein and should release carbohydrates
slowly. A golfer’s diet should include
a lot of these types of food. Lean meat, poultry
and fish are healthy protein choices as well
as leafy green vegetables and whole wheat products.
Instead of eating three meals per day, why not
try and eat smaller portioned meals throughout
the day. This helps to keep your glucose index
(blood sugar) stable but it also helps spread
energy release evenly and your body will use
energy more efficiently this way.
Don’t let fatigue, loss of stamina and
a decrease in energy levels hamper your game.
Healthy nutrition can save you shots and make
your game more enjoyable.
Water should be an essential part of any diet,
but remember that the amount of water or fluid
you drink per day depends on your weight. The
two biggest culprits that should be avoided are
alcohol and caffeine. We all enjoy having a drink
with our playing partner to celebrate a good
round of golf, but wait until you have finished
playing all 18 holes. Caffeine increases your
heart rate and over stimulates your muscles which
can impair your concentration and coordination.
Remember, golf nutrition goes hand in hand with
an exercise program designed for golfers in order
to build strength and to sustain energy.
If you struggle to keep your stamina and endurance
around the back nine or want to eat healthier,
it is time to evaluate your diet and consider
a better eating plan that will not only keep
you healthy, but also give you the extra strength
and energy you need to improve your game.
Best Value On Your Shoulder
This Strata Flip Stand Bag is a THIRD OF THE
PRICE of many equivalents and that makes this
the best deal you will put over your shoulder
this winter.
As we move out of the summer season we approach
that period when rain and wet waterlogged turf
will cause the suspension of trolleys and carts.
That’s when we all look for the lightest
bag (easiest to carry) that has a stand (to keep
the bag off the wet turf).
This no nonsense, quality
Strata bag comes in two colour combinations:
black/silver and black/red, is as lightweight
as they come, has a robust flip-stand that
doesn’t add weight and
is easy to use. You won’t match this price.
I expect these bags to move quickly so if you
would like one, just mail me –
duncan.arnold@foremostgolf1.com (and let me know
which colour you prefer) or call us in the shop.
