May 2007
Greetings from Duncan,
The wins just keep coming
for Chris Gill and Neil Vaughan. They came
joint first in the Tavistock Devon Alliance
meeting on Thursday with 42 points, sharing
first place with Ashley Moon and Andy Norman.
This win makes Chris Gill top of the PGA Order
of Merit. Congratulations boys! Chris and his
team then went on to play in the Titleist Assistants’ League
at Stinchcombe Hill and came second in the
Pro Individual and won the team event. He is
playing at Highcliffe Castle Pro-Am this week.
Music Quiz
Last week’s new members’ evening
and music quiz was highly contested! The winning
team were Katie Mowll, Guy Westaway, Maya & Tony
Deyes, and John Feltham. Commiserations to the
Captains’ Team who were robbed by a point
because of a mistake on their score card. Thanks
to everyone who came along and made it such an
enjoyable evening.
Ladies’ League
Hele Park’s 2007 Ladies’ team made
a fantastic start to their league matches by
beating Tavistock 7-0 last week. A fantastic
result, well done girls! Unfortunately they weren’t
so successful this week at Ilfracombe where they
lost 7-0. One extreme to the other!
In this newsletter we explain
the difference in grooves that are available
in wedges. 2007 is the last year that manufacturers
will make wedges with ‘U’ or ‘V’ grooves,
as they will become illegal in 2009. Talking
of illegalities, the R&A have tightened up
the testing and two new models from big companies
have failed to make the grade – the Callaway
460 HT 13 degree and the Cobra HS9 9 degree drivers.
Please note that not all Callaway 460’s
are affected. Please pop in to the shop if you
have one – both companies are offering
a free replacement of newer models. If you have
a similar model and you are worried it might
be illegal, please call in and I will check the
R&A website for you.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as
possible on the Cobra Demo Day on Tuesday between
4-8pm. This is your chance to try out THE hottest
driver of 2007, as well as the Baffler Rescue
Club.
Best wishes
Duncan

WEDGE DESIGNS: IS YOUR GROOVE RIGHT?
You will probably be aware that you need to check
that your Driver is going to be legal as the
COR restrictions come into the amateur game
this year. There have been several years of
notice on this, so we’ve been kept well
informed by the authorities.
Their next notice from the
USGA has been about the ‘grooves on your wedge”. Square
or ‘U’ grooves are going to be phased
out. These are the grooves that have enabled
the top Pros to land and stop a golf ball on
the green from the thickest of rough. It’s
this feature that has bred a number of ‘bombers
and gougers’ on the tour.
Actually the square groove will be banned on
the PGA Tour by Jan 1st, 2009 with the amateur
golfer affected after January 2010. So lots of
notice again.
But this is a rule change
that isn’t going
to really hurt the average golfer. The square
grooves have no additional effect (over the traditional ‘V’ shaped
grooves) on the Surlyn golf balls that the average
golfer uses.
Then, statistically the average golfer only hits
the green 13% of the time from 100 – 140
yards out. That means that any additional spin
that they can generate from the advanced square
grooves is wasted on sand in the bunker, greenside
turf or worse still the long grass in the rough.
No, this is a rule change that is going to have
far more impact on the Touring Pros and their
approach to the game right back at the Tee Box.
GOOD WEDGE DESIGN OPENS UP VERSATILITY
The range of Wedges that are available on the
market has increased dramatically. Even within
one supplier there are now 5 and more different
models with numerous loft and bounce configurations.
Mizuno have become a specialist player in this
market looking to produce Wedges that will offer
you the ability to select the exact loft, bounce
and look that is important to your game.
What I like about the ‘R’ Series
Wedges is the fact that they have the tour design
sole. It allows you to lay the club open or to
shut the face constructing different Wedge shots.
The appearance at address still looks comfortable
because of the rounded head shape (see the photo
left).
As you now know, the extra soft carbon steel
and Mizuno grain-flow forging used on the ‘R’ Series
will deliver superb ‘feel’ and ‘consistency’.
The ‘Grooves’ are precision milled
after forging to create the maximum backspin
and bite on your shots.
The clubs come in a Black Nickel or Nickel Chrome
finish.
One critical advantage of this finishing process
is the preservation of the grooves.
Left untreated they would wear quite quickly
and that would result in reduced spin. The Mizuno
finish preserves the grooves as they were intended,
making your Wedge a lethal short-game weapon
now, next year and long into the future.
If you haven’t tried a Mizuno Wedge, then
experience the feel, consistency and probably
most importantly, with a Wedge, the confidence
inspiring look at address whichever way you lay
the club. It is this versatility that we all
want in our short game clubs.
But, before making any decision
let’s
make sure we get the right fit, the right bounce
and the right solution for your game. Give me
a call.
Have a great week and good luck to all of you
playing this weekend.
Regards
Duncan
