March 2007
Last week Hele Park welcomed
Devon’s finest
young female golfers.
The Devon Girls Beginners
and Intermediate groups came along for training
with Stuart Disney last week. Due to the inclement
weather, they had a chance to play a ‘virtual
round’ on the golf simulator and practice
on the range. It was great to see such an array
of young talent and I am heartened that more
and more girls are taking up this great game.
Stuart is in Cornwall with the elite Ladies First
Team this weekend doing course preparation and
planning for their County Jamboree Week in May.

Winning Balls!
I hope you all received the email about the new
Srixon Z-URC balls. They are already having an
impact on the professional tour with Henrik Stenson
winning the Accenture Match Play Championship
last weekend with Srixon’s new ball. Click
here to order yours.
The new subscription year is nearly upon us and
members will shortly be receiving their rejoining
packs. Please would anybody wishing to make any
changes to their membership get in touch so that
we have the most up to date information? This
is also a good opportunity to ensure that we
have the correct contact details for you. A form
will accompany the information, so if you need
to make any amendments please do so with your
membership renewal.
Pro-Ams
Stuart, Chris and I are playing in various Pro-Ams
throughout the year. These are always a great
day out at impressive venues. Because of the
Pro-Am format, you will have lots of fun with
no pressure. If you think you would like to participate
in one this year please get in touch.
Over the next three weeks we take a closer look
at the importance of getting fitted, starting
this week with how to determine your correct
shaft length. How do you choose your golf shoes?
Why not pop in and let me help you make an informed
choice.
Enjoy the read.

Duncan

NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR SHOES
Laces are a thing of the past!
If you are into your gadgets then the NEW Footjoy
ReelFit shoe is for you. You’ll have to
see them to believe them, but these new shoes
have a feature, which moulds the shoe to your
foot, so you can achieve perfect-fitting shoes.
Simply twist the back of the shoe and the shoe’s
contours change to fit around your foot.
CHRIS GILL
Chris Gill is playing in the penultimate Devon
Order of Merit medal at Exeter Golf Course this
week. Hopefully he can close the gap and get
within winning distance.
Good luck Chris!
LOOK AT YOUR FOUR
BALL – ARE
THEY STANDARD?
The next time you are with golfers and their
golf clubs on the golf course look at just
the physical differences between the players.
Different heights, different strengths, different
hand size and finger length. Now look at yourself
and compare? Can you determine a ‘standard’ and
are you that ‘standard’ or are
you different from the standard in any of those
measurements?
Most golfers play with a ‘standard’ length
shaft (and grip size) so we have to assume that
most golfers are ‘standard’. Ridiculous,
isn’t it? But just compare the length of
shaft on the 5-irons in your playing group next
time and see what you think now.
You can see with your own eyes that the variety
amongst the four balls is large. That needs to
translate into a large variety of golf club setups
on the shaft length alone.
With a shaft on your irons that has been measured
to fit your physical characteristics, you will
find yourself feeling more comfortable at address
and that will translate into more confidence
and improved results.
And don’t wait until you are a single figure
handicap before deciding to play with a golf
club that fits you.
Remember 2007 is the year when all our members
decide to play with golf clubs that fit them.
If you are going to buy a set of Irons in the
next few months remember we all know making sure
they fit is the number one priority. Call me
or mail me if I can help.
DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR BONES ARE?
Well, a quarter of all your bones are in your
feet. In fact your foot contains 26 bones, 33
joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles.
The next time you stride off down the 1st fairway,
think about that and then as you struggle up
the 18th run a quick body check.
That’s right, not just
a foot check, because anything out of alignment
in your feet and the rest of your body is going
to have had to compensate over your 10 mile
hike.
Here’s another great
fact: there are 250,000 sweat glands in your
feet and they will leak over half a pint of
moisture in a round of golf.
So as you sit in the changing room and pull off
your shoes ask yourself how much care you took
about choosing that pair of shoes. Was it a ‘fast
food’ experience? Did you make a quick
decision on appearance or brand? Did you try
on just one size?
I think that you know that taking time to fit
a golf shoe correctly is an investment that we
should both make to make sure that you enjoy
all eighteen holes.
Any company that has been specialising in the
design and manufacture of golf shoes since 1857
must know what they are doing. Not only has FootJoy
made a name for their understanding of the athletic
support that their shoes provide to the golfer
through-out the swing (under the name of Field
and Flint they were the official shoe of the
American Ryder Cup team as far back as 1927);
and not only do they specialise in providing
protection on the golf course in all conditions.
(DryJoys shoes were introduced in 1989 setting
the standard for waterproofing in golf shoes).
But they also pioneered fitting for the golf
shoe.
That search for the perfect fit for your golf
shoe has continued and in 1999 FootJoy introduced
a golf shoe based on a Laser Last system. The
Laser Last is a composite of thousands of digital
scans of men's feet by the FootJoy Laser Fitting
System.
Now FootJoy, in 2007, is
introducing ReelFit technology with the BOA
lacing system that allows you to “dial in” for a more precise
and consistent fit. Want to know more – I’ll
give an insight next week – in the meantime
you can go to www.footjoy.co.uk to read more.
Have a great week and good luck to all of you
playing this weekend.
Regards
Duncan
