June 2007
Greetings from Duncan,
You’ll see that a new addition to the
mail was introduced last week – ‘Single
Clicks’ in the whiteboard. So that you
know, you can click on these ‘windows’ and
find out more about some products and services
that I think may interest you. This week take
a look at the exciting opportunity to experience
some of South Africa’s top golfing destinations
and an optional wild life experience.
Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the Men’s
Monthly Medals – Darren Read (Div I) and
Guy Westaway (Div II) and to the winner of the
Ladies’ Monthly Medal Betty Golding. All
scores and results can be found at www.heleparkgolf.co.uk/results.
Glenmuir Best Nett Champions
After his 1st round win at Wrangaton against
Treasurer Richard Pryor (15) 2/1, Hele Park’s
Vice Captain Neil Vaughan (15) played a home
draw against Devon Under 15s player Sam Edwards
(5). Neil won 4/3 and so goes onto Round 3. Well
done Neil, and good luck in the next round!
Junior Golf
Calling all junior members of Hele Park! During
the summer holidays a four week course will be
held, focusing on constructing scores for competition
rounds. In order to do this the majority of the
time will be spent practising the most important
part of the game – the short game. The
course will be led by Simon Warne and is open
to all junior members of the club. Please contact
the shop to book your place.
This week I’m discussing the importance
of having your clubs fitted. As always, if you
would like any advice you know where to come!
We have all the latest equipment and a vast array
of demos available so if you’re in any
doubt about the suitability of your clubs come
and see me!
Best wishes
Duncan

EUROPEAN TITLE
It’s great to see so many young Europeans
doing so well in the US Open. It won’t
be long before one of them gets a major title.
UPCOMING NEWSLETTER FEATURES
Over the next two weeks it’s all about
irons I also take a look at how the correct shaft
length can improve your game. Are you interested
in playing golf in South Africa? If so I have
an awesome opportunity available for you to do
just that. Remember if you have any questions,
pop in and chat to me, I am happy to help with
some advice on helping you enjoy your game of
golf more.
COMPETITION TIME
IN SOUTH AFRICA…
Wake up in Cape Town, just below Table Mountain
and then take on golfers from all over the
world on the slopes of Erinvale Golf Club!
After prize-giving and a ‘Castle Lager’ in
the 19th, it’s dinner in an African Boma,
and banter of how you’ll fare on Pezula’s
high-rise fairways.
Imagina Holidays in conjunction with Shawn Nicholson
of African Experience want to take you to South
Africa for 10 days next year, to play six rounds
of golf as part of an international golf group.
Shawn has been taking golfers on South African
golf tours for 8 years now, as a full-time host.
For the 2008 International Golf Festival, the
six courses each bring something truly memorable
to your experience. That may be chipping out
from between vineyards, tall oak trees and Cape
Dutch buildings on the De Zalze Winelands Estate.
It may even be the experience of driving through
the small seaside towns of False Bay, past the
Kalk Bay Fishing Harbour to Clovelly Country
Club situated on the Cape Peninsula (with views
of two oceans).
And in-between the spirit
and competition of the Festival, catch the
cable car to the top of Table Mountain, wine
taste on one of the world’s
oldest (and most beautiful) wine routes, sample ‘pukka’ South
African food and visit a couple of nature reserves… all
included in the price.
WHEN IS SHORTER ACTUALLY LONGER
Amongst all the noise there is one simple physics
rule we all know. The longer the shaft, the faster
the club head speed, the further we will hit
the golf ball.
Hmmm. That’s not true I’m afraid.
I can’t draw the physics equation but I
can tell you that each of you who read this feature
will have a shaft length beyond which you will
actually have a decline, in not just accuracy,
but distance as well.
A famous clubmaker in the
US once proved the point using a 5 foot 4 top
female golfer and a bar full of male club members.
Using a Driver with a 54" shaft the lady
golfer cleared the 200 yard mark comfortably
every time but not one of the male golfers,
some with respectable handicaps, could get
past the 200 yard mark with anything other
than the odd blow.
You’ve probably figured that a Driver with
a 54" shaft is a very unwieldy club and
you’ve also possibly accepted that it might
be difficult to get the clubhead back to the
ball square while making contact anywhere near
the sweet spot. But 54" is ridiculous right?
But what isn’t ridiculous? For you, where
is the point that you think is too long for your
game. Is it 50"? Is it 48"? You’re
probably playing with a Driver that has a 45" shaft
(or maybe even longer if you bought it this year).
Tiger Woods played last year with a Driver that
was 43½" long. If you played golf
when Ronald Reagan was President of the US then
you probably played with a 43" shaft then.
So how did you decide what length shaft works
best for you, and would you GAIN DISTANCE WITH
A SHORTER SHAFT?
The next time that you are thinking of improving
your play from the Tee Box or buying new equipment,
please come through and see me. I can make sure
that you will be fitted with the right length
shaft to improve your golf and increase your
enjoyment.
YOU HAVE SO MUCH CHOICE, TAKE SOME CARE
If I asked you to list your #1 brand for golf
irons there’s a good chance you would think
of Mizuno, whatever you currently play. And if
I asked for a top three I can’t believe
Mizuno wouldn’t be in that list for all
golfers.
This is a company that appeals to the serious
golfer, providing a selection of models, designed
to leave you with the chance to create a perfect
match to your game.
Of course, making that perfect match does need
you to spend a little time understanding the
benefits that each model offers, and how those
benefits match your swing and game requirements.
I would love to have a conversation with anyone
considering a new set of Mizuno Irons to help
you find the perfect solution. So here is a start
to a conversation, looking first at the MP Range
of Irons.
Mizuno MP 67: A club for the seriously good golfer,
the outstanding ball striker, who wants total
control of shot shape.
A marriage of a Tour blade with a small Cut
Muscle back. This allows the COG (Centre of Gravity)
inside the muscle back design to be pin-pointed
exactly. A neutral COG relative to the shaft
axis and a consistent sweet spot location allow
quality ball strikers to work the ball in either
direction, whilst maintaining control of trajectory.
Mizuno MP 32: These are still best used by the
low handicap golfer who has consistent ball striking
capability and wants to be able to manoeuvre
the ball to attack pins.
Again a Cut Muscle back design,
but this time the COG is set just a little
deeper and lower than the MP 67’s thus
providing a little more forgiveness with a
natural mid height ball flight. These influences
are subtle allowing the better golfer to work
the ball higher or lower, left or right.
The Mizuno MP 60 Irons allow good golfers to
play with a very classic looking club that offers
some playability benefits.
Merging a half cavity with
Mizuno’s Cut
Muscle design and increasing the face size by
4% has allowed the designers to increase the
sweet spot size by 10% and that pays big dividends
with consistency of ball strike. This design
also allows the benefit to progressively increase
through the set, delivering maximum support in
the long irons.
Recognise your club. Let me help you validate
that decision and then fit the club perfectly
to your swing and your dimensions. The perfect
match with the perfect fit is 30 minutes of effort
that will improve your enjoyment every one of
the many hours that you spend on the course.

Have a great week and good luck to all of you
playing this weekend.
Regards
Duncan
