July 2007
Greetings from Duncan,
Captain’s Day – Sunday
8th July
Make sure you’ve got your name down for
Captain’s Day! It’s always a very
enjoyable day and there are lots of prizes to
be won. It’s a team event, the front 9
is a Texas Scramble and the back is played in
a Stableford format.
Ladies’ Open
A full field was under threat from the weather
with the early players enduring a monsoon shower
before the sun decided to shine, making it much
better for the afternoon players. Playing in
teams of 3, with 2 scores to count and the added
twist of all 3 scores counting on the par 3 holes
- an early score of 70 points from Lorraine Gorman,
Sue Widdowson and Myfanwy Crouch of Teignmouth
held sway until much later in the day.
Belinda McSherry (7 - Yelverton)
and Gillian Down (16) and Jill Durling (24)
of Holsworthy posted 71 points in the late
afternoon and were hotly tipped to carry off
the main prize. However, the tipsters had not
taken into account Churstons’ Ann
Westwood (22), Sue West (14) and Jean Strain
(20) who managed to post 72 points at the last
minute.
1st Ann Westwood (22), Sue West (14),
Jean Strain 20) – Churston 72 points
2nd Belinda McSherry (7 Yelverton), Gillian Down
(16),
Jill Durling (24) – Holsworthy 71 points
3rd Lorraine Gorman (22), Sue Widdowson (23),
Myfanwy Crouch (22) – Teignmouth 70 points
Men’s Invitation
Day
A full field of hardy players on a very wet
day played 4ball betterball stableford off ¾ handicaps.
Conditions worsened throughout the day, but the
high scores didn’t reflect this. Hele Parks’ Seniors
Captain, Brian Holdford (13), and his guest,
Geoff Holland (19) of Dainton Park, carded a
great 45 points to win.
1st – Brian Holdford
(13) Hele Park &
Geoff Holland (19) Dainton Park 45 points
2nd – Neil Vaughan (12) Hele Park &
Chris Ball (26) Teign Valley 44 Points
3rd – John Feltham (20) Hele Park &
Andy Livingstone (12) Dainton Park 42 Points
This week I discuss how the results of the
recent equipment survey can help me, your Pro,
to help you select the best possible driver for
your game. I also have a fantastic offer for
you where you will receive a FREE Mizuno R Series
wedge with your purchase of the Mizuno MX-25
set of irons - a free fitting would also be included
of course! Remember that I am available for a
chat and some advice on your golf game whenever
you need it, so pop into the shop to see me as
well as the latest equipment I have on offer.
Have a good week!
Best wishes,
Duncan

SUPER-STU’S
BRAND OF THE WEEK
Somehow Stuart has managed to sneak in again
this week! This time your favourite coaching
pro (apart from me!) is here to speak about
his favourite brand and
one that he has used his entire playing career – Mizuno.
“Hello peeps! Having been a Mizuno staff
player (much like Luke Donald you understand!),
I believe that Mizuno’s range of equipment
is unparalleled in the golfing industry. Offering
products for the complete beginner to the fantastic
world class player (me!) they are a one-stop
shop. At Hele Park we stock their full range
from their entry series MX19 through to their
awe-inspiring MP series of irons. I have just
added into my own bag the MP67 irons and the
MP Fli-Hi rescue iron, and two fantastic MPR
wedges. Their appearance and playability are
second to none, especially the wedges. Why not
also try the Bettinardi putters – probably
the best looking putters on the market. They’re
available in store now – mention this email
and receive 10% discount.”
DRIVERS: THERE ARE
OVER 16% ‘DON’T
KNOW’s’
Thanks to all the people that responded to my
equipment survey, and the members of the 80 other
clubs that also ran surveys, we now have some
very interesting information on the current market
share by brand and the potential future market
share based on demand.
The graphic below is the national result for
Drivers and makes for some interesting reading.
The Ping Driver (played by our latest US Open
winner Angel Cabrera) is the most sought after
Driver on the market, with TaylorMade having
the greatest actual market share currently.
However, also shown on this graphic is the ‘Don’t
Know’s’. They made up over 16% of
the respondents and reflect the growing understanding
that the selection of a new golf club (Driver
or any other club in the bag) is best discussed
with me, so that, whatever solution is chosen,
the choice will be good for your specific golf
game. In golf we are certainly not all created
equal.
Finally in any survey such
as this, there is the aspiration. We might
all want an exclusive brand, but when actually
making the purchase, possibly budget constraints
or an understanding that you might be better
off spending your money on another aspect of
your game, will influence your final choice.
That’s another example
of just how personal the purchasing decision
is when buying your golf clubs.
Whichever model you choose, making sure that
the shaft strength and loft matches your swing
speed will influence your level of satisfaction
with the club. So please come through and chat
to me. Let me help increase your enjoyment of
the game.
A FREE MIZUNO R
SERIES WEDGE (WORTH £79.99)
Any golfer that books for a fitting and purchases
a set of Mizuno MX-25 Irons anytime from July
5th to the close of business on July 30th will
receive a free Mizuno ‘R’ series
wedge, in 52, 56 or 60 degrees, valued at £79.99.
See the banner below to book your fitting.
This is a great offer for
the regular golfer. The Mizuno MX-25 is a perfect
iron for any golfer that wants to have a forged
traditional club, with great feel, which delivers
a package of technology support that will improve
the consistency of their ball striking. Here’s
what I think are the most important features
and attributes:
The new forging materials allow a more forgiving,
deeper pocket cavity. That results in a lower
and deeper CoG making it easier to get the ball
airborne on a higher trajectory.
The size of the cavity is
greater in the long irons, where more assistance
is required to create consistency and height
on approach shots, and actually becomes a ‘power bar’ in
the short irons where the most golfers require
more ‘workability’.
This progressive design means that the club
works for the best golfers as well as the higher
handicaps in the club.
The materials used in the club head are even
softer and purer than those used in the award
winning MX-23. That means that golfers of all
handicaps can experience the great feel of a
forged Mizuno golf club.
Finally, look at the sole design when you are
in the shop. It is designed to be more forgiving
at impact in all turf conditions helping to create
cleaner, crisper ball striking.
And to add further fuel: a group of test golfers
voted the Mizuno MX-25 the #1 Iron in a recent
Greenside Iron Test
WE ARE ALL CREATED UN-EQUAL
In the recent articles I talked about the compromise
between workability (controlling shot shape)
and playability (lots of technical support but
limited ability to shape the ball). To highlight
the point further lets look at three of our own
golfers.
Handicap Range 28-17
I’ve chosen Clive Seymour (24) as an example
for this section because he won’t always
be lucky enough to hole-in-one his off-target
shots! I would recommend the PGA Collection irons
as they benefit from a large head design and
have a low centre of gravity. This helps to achieve
a higher initial launch angle enabling Clive
to get the ball airborne with more ease. The
PGA Collection irons have perimeter weighting
which gives more forgiveness for off-centre hits.
Handicap Range 16-8
For players of Neil Vaughan’s (15) calibre
I would suggest an iron that gives the player
a little more feedback enabling them to feel
more connected with the impact.
The MacGregor NVG2 iron is a good example of
this with its oversized head and a vast array
of shaft options.
Handicap Range 7-0
Paul MacGlinchey plays off 6, and when a player
reaches this level the smallest adjustments make
the biggest differences.
Paul uses Ping irons at the moment, but if he
was looking to upgrade, I would custom fit him
with the Titleist 775CB.
The oversized long irons give a true straight
flight with the short irons providing advanced
playability into and around the greens.
A small difference in club design can have a
huge impact on your game and your enjoyment.
Spend 30 minutes now and add enjoyment every
hour you play golf.
Have a great week and good luck to all of you
playing this weekend.
Regards
Duncan |
