February 2007
Greetings from Chris,
Duncan is sunning himself in Portugal this week
(he calls it work), so I am your guest newsletter
editor for one week only!
The annual DCGU ‘Rules School’ was
held last weekend. Congratulations to Club Secretary
Wendy Stanbury, Club Captain Phil Steele, Seniors’ Captain
Brian Holdford and Tony Jeffs, who all passed
with flying colours!
The New Callaway Ft-I Driver
I have heard that Callaway is offering 100 consumers
the chance to own the much-hyped square-headed
driver prior to its official launch on 15th April.
It will come in an exclusive gift set with a
free sleeve of FT-I logo HX Tour Balls. More
information is available at www.callawaygolf.com/fti
The ‘Turn Up And
Play’ scheme continues
to be popular so we are continuing it into February.
As ever, your comments on this or any other subject
are very welcome.
The Devon Professionals Winter Medal was held
at Royal North Devon last week and I finished
fourth with a score of 73, which has moved me
into second place on the Men’s Order of
Merit.
Good wishes to our Lady Captain
Issie MacFarlane who has been ill recently. I’m glad to
report she’s on the mend and will be back
at the club very soon. In other club news, welcome
to our newest members Keith Filby, Ken Cornwell,
Henry Fisher and Edna Bond.

In the mail this week I continue my discussion
on Fairway Woods and how the right shot, using
your Fairway Woods, would result in your shots
landing on the fairway more consistently in general.
Do you want to improve your golf game? If so
using the right clubs fitted to you, practicing
and warming up and personalising your game are
just three of the steps you can take to playing
your best game.
Have a great golfing week – here’s
hoping the sunshine lasts!
Regards,
Chris

Safe off the Tee... Again!
Last week I described the feeling you got with
a perfectly struck Fairway Wood shot. The latest
sole designs, which bring the point of contact
with the turf forward, are making it much easier
to make this shot, more often, even from the
tightest of Fairway Lies.
This week I want to bring to your attention the
most under-rated golf shot – the “go-to
3-Wood Tee Shot” - that will still give
good distance AND is going to leave you almost
always in the Fairway. If you don’t have
this shot, then practice and develop it.
The ability to pull out a
club on the Tee and know that you are going
to be playing your second from a safe, but
still competitive place, is priceless when
you are under pressure. Remember Todd Hamilton’s Open victory. Down the
home stretch and in the play-off he kept playing
that little cut 3-Wood off the Tee that left
him behind Ernie Els but playing from the short
grass (to Ernie’s gorse bushes).
If you are going to put this shot into your
arsenal then make sure you look for a 3-Wood
with a slightly deeper, rather than shallower,
face. It will be a slightly harder club to use
off the deck but will offer a larger sweet spot
and more forgiveness off the Tee.
And don’t be put off by the lack of adverts
for Fairway Woods that go further, these clubs
also now feature thinner faces (that deliver
more energy to the golf ball) and weight placement
to ensure broader sweet spots (delivering the
same energy from slightly off-centre strikes).
Work through your requirements for your Fairway
Woods. Are they taking up space and adding weight
in your bag? Have you got the right lofts and
right selection? Does your selection give you
the ability to play the safe Tee shot when you
need it most? In fact why not come through and
chat to me?
Small, but easy steps to improvement
Playing better golf is actually easier for most
of you than you would imagine. Look at the four
suggestions below and ask yourself which area
of improvement you wouldn’t be able to
implement.
~~ Make sure that you play with equipment that
fits your physical dimensions, your strength
and your athletic ability.
For most golfers there are a couple of shots
to be gained immediately by ensuring that they
are playing with equipment fitted for them.
There are so many new ideas to be found in the
latest equipment that buying golf equipment can
be as bewildering as purchasing a new computer.
The secret to another couple of shots improvement
is matching the benefits that a new piece of
equipment offers to the areas where your game
needs assistance.
~~There is no need to completely change your
swing but you can take shots off your handicap
each year by finding an aspect of your game where
you can improve and then practice technique.
What would you be shooting if you improved your
performance from the greenside (including the
bunkers) by just 20%?
Our golf course will place different pressures
on different golfers and different game plans.
Therefore there isn’t a standard set that
our members should carry in their bag.
Marry your equipment choices to an improved game
plan for our golf course and you are going to
take the big numbers off your card.
These are all obvious areas
where, with minimal effort and minimal investment,
you can improve your game. There’s no reason you can’t
embark on a mission to embrace all four areas
this year. Go on, where are you going to start?
