An Introduction To Hele Park Golf Centre, Newton Abbot, Devon

22nd February 2007

Greetings from Duncan,

Chris Gill
Chris continued his run of success in the Devon PGA Medal at Churston Golf Club. Chris missed out by one shot finishing third, and closed the gap on Jon Langmead at the top of the Order of Merit with only two events left.

Booking System
Having trialled the non-booking system for the past couple of months and taken on board all feedback, we have now reviewed the system. Members can now book three days in advance for social golf and as far in advance as they want for Winter League matches and Mixed Stablefords. Non-members are now able to book in advance, as long as the fee is paid in full. For more information click here.

Caption Competition
Congratulations to Stephen Davies who wins last week’s caption competition with ‘I said. Nooooooo it's still closed. Can’t you see the rain…. dummy!’ Steve wins a sleeve of the brand new Pro V1 balls.

Travel Tip of the Week Brought to you by Imagina Holidays: ‘Meet & Greet’ Airport Parking
There’s enough hassle and stress in arranging a holiday so this week let us eliminate the airport car parking from your list! Normally after a long and stressful drive to the airport, you have to find the off-site car park, check your car in and get the transfer to the airport which could add on another 45 minutes before your check in time.
So why not take the hassle out of parking your car and treat yourself to the ‘Meet and Greet’ service.
You will be met outside your departure terminal by a uniformed driver who will take your car to a secured car park whilst you are away and then will return it to you upon your arrival ready for you to drive home as soon as you have collected your luggage. Saves a lot of time, hassle and stress - worth the small additional cost!! Prices vary according to your departure airport so call Dolly Ward on 01423 522636 or email dolly.ward@imaginaholidays.co.uk for details and prices.

Enjoy the read.

Regards,
Duncan

IN THE MAIL THIS WEEK
In the mail this week I have included some fitting success stories of customers that I have helped to fit and give my advice on members and their fairway woods. Please phone me or call in to the shop if you need any advice on your technique, clubs, grips or if you have any other questions.

What They Should Have In Their Bag

To emphasise the points I have been making about your selection of Fairway Woods I have looked into the bags of 3 of our members. Below I have published what they are doing right and the small adjustments that they could make.

Ben Martin - Handicap 3
Ben is a good player with a fast swing speed, so I fitted Ben with a Titleist 906F2 15 degree three wood with a Y7 stiff shaft. A combination of higher loft and the Y7 shaft make this an easy club to control and shape.
Paul McGlinchey - Handicap 12
I would recommend that Paul uses a Mizuno F50 fairway four wood with a Grafalloy Prolaunch shaft. I recommend this because Paul is very tall and hits the ball extremely straight with the driver, so he can use this as a fairway wood as well as a control teeing off club.
Lee Johnston - Handicap 17
My recommendation for Lee would be a Cobra seven wood with the M-Speed shaft to suit Lee’s build. Lee needs help launching the ball and this would be easier with the softer shaft and extra loft on the seven wood.

I hope you found that interesting. It certainly highlights how each of our guinea pigs needs a different club selection. Want me to review your choices? Then come into the shop or mail me on duncan.arnold@foremostgolf.com.

Fitting Success Stories
Making sure that a member has the correct golfing equipment is one of our key roles as PGA Club Professionals. Here are the stories of some of the people who I have helped with fitting…
The successes of all three golfers (shown alongside) have materialised from club fitting sessions. Doug Arnold changed his irons from traditional steel to lighter graphite shafts to improve his distance.

We also fitted him with thicker grips and changed the lie angle by one degree three months before his success in the English Seniors’ Championship. Doug commented that his distance improved but the biggest improvement was his control of distance with the thicker grips.

Ben Martin is further proof that club fitting can lead to success on the course. Ben was lucky enough to come with me to a Titleist club fitting workshop where we were shown their new range of shafts and how to calculate which is best for each individual golfer. After this Ben came back and used our demo equipment to find the correct driver for him which immediately lowered his handicap and got him into the Devon’s Men’s team and won a Devon Order of Merit title.

Neil Vaughan came for a wedge fitting. Neil wanted to lower his scores and he felt the best way was to improve his short game from 100 yards in. When checking Neil’s equipment we found he had a big gap between his pitching wedge (loft 48) and sand wedge (loft 56). Tour professionals have a gap of four degrees in their wedges, and most carry three – a gap wedge of 52 degrees, a sand wedge of 56 and, depending on the course, maybe a lob wedge of 60 degrees. In Neil’s case we fitted him a gap wedge and his success recently speaks for itself.

Custom fitting doesn’t have to mean a completely new set of clubs. By analysing your strengths and weaknesses it’s possible to adjust and make small changes to your set or equipment which will have a huge impact on your success on the course. Simple changes like thickness of grip can sometimes be enough to revolutionise your game. Come to Hele Park for your club MOT!
Convinced yet?

Playing with equipment which isn’t fitted to you as an individual immediately puts you at a disadvantage. Even if equipment has been bought elsewhere the club professional should always be available to give personalised equipment and product advice with regard its suitability and a course of action if it is not. Contact me on duncan.arnold@foremostgolf.com if you’d like to discuss fitting.
Have a great week and good luck to all of you playing this weekend.

Regards
Duncan
