February 2007
Greetings from Duncan,
The Pros were out last
week playing at the Devon Alliance Captain’s Dinner held at Saunton
Golf Club. I would like to thank my playing partner
Steve Bristow for a very enjoyable couple of
days and I am now looking forward to coaching
him in Portugal in February.
Congratulations must go to Chris Gill and Neil
Vaughan who flew the flag high for Hele Park, coming
in second place over the two days with 42 points
on day one and 39 on day two. Unfortunately, Steve
and I finished joint last with 35 and 21 points!
It was good to see Stuart out and about playing
and I know this year he is trying to play in more
events.
The course reopened this week and comments from
members suggest greens are in excellent condition. Thanks
must go to Roger Langabeer and his team of greenkeepers
for keeping the course so well throughout the monsoon
season!
We held our annual Indoor Sports Evening on Friday.
Hosted by Neil Vaughan’s Really Wild Show
there were lots of fun and games including ‘Bug-Eyed
Skittles’ and an appearance from a live snake!
Guests of honour were Caroline Creer form Devon
Air Ambulance and Emma Baker from Marie Curie Nurses,
who each came to be presented with their cheque
for all the charity money we have raised this year.
2006 has been an excellent year for Hele Park’s
fund-raising. Along with the usual generous donations
from members and visitors we also had a huge boost
from Ben & Jon’s sponsored 108 holes
and Wendy & Olivia’s sponsored booze-free
January. In total £4,220 went to Devon Air
Ambulance and £3,300 went to Marie Curie
Nurses – a great effort all round.

Presentation
Carrying on from last week when I chose balls for
Wendy Stanbury, Peter Read and Ian Lidbury, I now
move on to their drivers. All three have had recent
fittings and this has improved their driving performance
dramatically. I cannot stress highly enough the
importance of being fitted with the correct driver,
for example one Callaway driver can come in 48
different configurations. When you take into account
there are now thousands of companies trying to
sell you a driver, we are here to advise you through
this minefield to make sure you get the right one
for you. With our Price Match policy, you can be
sure that you will get the best club at the right
price.
Next week Stuart and I are hard at work in Portugal,
coaching under the strain of high temperatures
we hope! So, Chris Gill will be our guest newsletter
editor for the week – thanks Chris.
In this week’s mail I chat a bit more about
drivers and the importance of playing with a driver
which is specifically suited to your particular
game. It can be the latest and greatest, but if
it is not fitted to you, it will do you no good.
Why not pop in to the shop this week and chat to
me about custom fitting. You’ll be amazed
at the difference it will make.
Have a good week!
Regards,
Duncan

The Flawless Drive Is Within Reach
As you walk onto the Tee, Driver in hand, you will
have a good idea of how the shot is going to end
up. Your confidence and attitude as you prepare
for your shot will influence your swing, and you
know it.
We have all experienced the feeling of teeing up
confidently, almost sure of where the shot is going
to go.
Even the practice swings have served to further
build our confidence.
And then …
Slow takeaway, nice rhythm on the downswing, the
perfect connection, a balanced follow-through and
that ecstatic feeling of watching your ball sail
through the distant skyline down the Fairway. Perfect!
We all play golf to experience this shot.
A surfer waits for the ocean to provide the perfect
wave. Golfers also search for the perfect drive,
but the difference is that we don’t have
to wait helplessly, we can exploit the latest technology.
Over the past few weeks I’ve explained how
you can make sure you experience this shot more
often. I’ve talked about how the new technology
improves your chances. I’ve also mentioned
how something as simple as increasing your loft
can get you closer to the green and how vital the
correct flex on your shaft is in ensuring that
your ball soars with great hang-time.
Pop in with your driver next time you’re
at the club or mail me if you would like to chat
about your Driver. Let me help you ensure that
2007 is your year for the flawless drive.
Don't Be Misled
By Appearance
One of the golf shots that stands out for most
golfers is a sweetly struck, high-flying Fairway
Wood that lands and rolls gently up onto the Green.
Part of the pleasure is in the feedback that you
pick up through the shaft as the golf ball is crushed
in the sweet spot of the face. But I think that
the most satisfying aspect of this shot is the
ball flight and distance.
The extra length (when compared to a Hybrid or
Long-Iron) of the shaft results in a faster club
head speed and greater distance, while the increased
loft and low, deep centre of gravity (when compared
to the Driver) provides a higher, more spectacular
ball flight.
I can only believe that this club is the poor cousin,
when it comes to publicity, of the Driver and Hybrid
because its improvements and innovations over the
last years have been less visual.
The big-headed, hit-it-for-miles Driver and the
Iron-Wood-combo, hit-it-from-anywhere Hybrid enjoy
the advantage of revolutionary appearance that
is easy to market in the glossy magazines.
But don’t be misled. The Fairway Wood has
its own, far more subtle innovations that have
made this club so much easier to use (off Fairway
and Tee and out of Bunker and Rough), with all
the other benefits of further and straighter more
often.
Subtle
But Important Design Improvements
Adams started the revolution in head design in
the Fairway Wood with their ‘Tight Lies’.
These clubs placed the CoG lower than ever before,
making it easy to launch the golf ball higher,
more consistently.
Recent innovation has, of course, included hotter
faces and higher MOI, but the biggest improvement
is in sole design.
The ground contact point in the latest Titleist
Fairway Wood, the 906F2, has been moved way forward
to just behind the face WITHOUT raising or negatively
influencing the CoG.
Maintaining a forward impact point improves directional
control and ball flight by reducing the potential
for the club to bounce or skip into the ball.
Hotter faces, smarter soles, lower and deeper CoG
and increased MOI, the latest Fairway Woods might
NOT look much different, but they out-perform the
equivalent clubs of a few years back.
If you would like me to show you some of the improvements
just come on into the shop.
