Greetings from Duncan,
Just a reminder – don’t miss out
on the chance to WIN fantastic prizes worth £2500
from Srixon, Ping, Mizuno, Powakaddy, Glenmuir
and Nike. All you have to do is
click here and answer some questions on what
equipment you are playing with now, and what
you would play with next. Not only will you stand
a chance of winning, but you’ll also be
helping me gauge how best to stock my shop for
the year!
I am aware that a few people
may have experienced a technical challenge
last week that meant you couldn’t submit
your answers? This problem has now been rectified.
Please if you did experience any difficulties
could you click on the click here in the notice
board and resubmit your answers. Anyone that
did enter last week and had no problems will
not need to resubmit their answers. My apologies
for any inconvenience and I look forward to your
responses.
Competition Successes
Well done to Sam Wallace (14) who came in first
place in the DCJGS Stableford Division II (13-21)
at Saunton West Course with 38 points. When I
spoke to Sam, he said that his strongest part
of the game was his putting. We fitted him with
a new putter over the Easter Extravaganza weekend.
Sam went for the Scotty Cameron Newport design,
which works in harmony with his putting stroke.
Congratulations also go to last year’s
Club Captain, Peter Collings, who came first
in the Men’s Monthly Medals at the weekend
with a nett 61. Peter recently had his club lies
changed after a free fitting session. Good to
see it had an immediate effect!
Due to the recent success with the custom-fitting
voucher, we are continuing to run it. If you’ve
not got round to it yet, give me a call and I
will be pleased to help you and get you in the
winning circle too!
Demo Days
I would urge everybody to come to the Hele Park
Demo Days and have a go with all the companies’ rescue
clubs and see for yourselves. This week we have
Callaway (Thursday 26 April) from 4-8pm and everybody
is welcome. The Callaway Square Head FT-i has
been the talk of the industry for the last 6
months, so here is YOUR opportunity to have a
go and see what the hype’s been all about!
Demo Days give everybody the chance to try all
the companies’ ranges of clubs and shafts
that are not always available in the shops.
Other Demo Day dates for your diary….
This week I discuss the benefits of the Hybrid-Iron
and take a look at the latest developments in
golf shirt technology. With the summer clothing
stock now in store why not pop in for a bargain
or just pop in for a chat.
Best wishes,
Duncan

ISN'T IT TIME YOU WERE RESCUED?
It still amazes me that the majority of players
still don’t own a rescue club of some
sort. These clubs have revolutionised the game
of golf making it easier to gain distance and
get out of the rough. Last week during the
Ladies’ Improvers class, I lent out three
demo rescue clubs to three members of the class.
Each came back singing their praises and each
purchased one!
For those of you that have
yet to try out a rescue club, we have demo
irons in Cobra, Bazooka, Wilson, Titleist,
PGA and Strata. They are all available for
you to try on the range or the course free
of charge. Rescue clubs start at as little
as £14.99. Every player should
have at least one in his or her bag! It is Mystic
Duncan’s prediction that in the coming
years all irons will become rescue irons.
FACED WITH SO MUCH CHOICE, FOCUS ON YOU
Over the last weeks I have talked about where
Iron designs are going and why. A number of queries
and questions have come up. A common question
remains: which golfers should play with forged
and which should play with other compositions.
Much as the magazines and adverts would try to
simplify that answer, it isn’t a sensible
place to start any selection process. That’s
the centre of any argument that I am going to
make. The process is about you, your golf game,
your circumstances:
1. Start with your budget and what you are prepared
to spend,
2. How do you strike your Irons currently (are
you consistent, do you have a higher or lower
trajectory, do you push or pull, draw or fade),
3. What is the strength of your Iron game and
where do you lose shots,
4. What is important to you in looks, feel,
brand and what priority do you place on results
over those softer requirements,
5. Now we can look at a much narrower list of
clubs that fit your selection criteria rather
than the interests of an advert or a promotion
that somebody has screaming
from the middle of the newspaper, golf mag or
internet page.
Approached this way you are going to be ‘investing’ in
a product that has a great chance of delivering
pay-off. The next step is to make sure that the
club is built (at no extra charge) to fit you.
That is going give you a club head whose design
is built to improve your game and a club that
is going to work WITH your setup and swing.
NOT AVOIDING THE QUESTION
When you talk to members that are playing
with forged clubs they will mention the tremendously
responsive feel of the
golf ball off the club face. For many golfers
that feel is important to their enjoyment of
the game and their sense of
confidence with the club.
The biggest advantage of
a forged club head though, is the absolute
consistency. The metal will have no air pockets
or blemishes, in fact almost no flaws whatsoever,
and that will result in a perfect strike off
the club face every time. If you
hit a 6 Iron 150 yards off the sweet spot, then
that’s what you will get every time.
As a forged head is one-piece it is also going
to be far more resilient retaining that perfect
construction, perfect feel and
perfect result over a long period.
NANOTECHNOLOGY DOES WHAT FOR ME?
While the glamorous Driver, or the fundamental
Irons, or the exotic Putter grab the headlines
with innovation and the promises of shots off
the scorecard, the best innovations get few headlines.
However there is a fantastic advancement in
rainwear, wind protection and outer-wear that
I would like to mention. Scientific advances,
especially something called nanotechnology, now
provide us with the lightest, thinnest, no-noise
jackets which the rain bounces off, shirts that
somehow keep you cool in the summer and warm
in the winter and grips that seem to get tackier
in the wet.
How this works, I have no idea, but it has revolutionised
golf in the more traditional areas of the northern
hemisphere. As we approach summer take the time
to think about your golf gear.
Check out your rain-jacket.
It doesn’t
need to rustle on the back-swing, scream on the
down-swing and announce your arrival 40 meters
before you get to the green. And again it shouldn’t
restrict your backswing.
EACH CLUB IS A DIFFERENT COMPROMISE
Each Iron, from the Pitching Wedge up through
the set to the 3-iron (or 2-iron if you are brave),
will present you with a slightly increased challenge.
As you go up through the set each club you use
will have a slightly longer shaft and slightly
less loft. It will be harder to get the ball
onto a good trajectory, off the sweet spot. If
only the mid-irons could be as easy to strike
as the 8-iron and if only the 3-iron could be
as easy as the 6-iron.
Actually if you were tracking the results of
your performance with each of your Irons, that
is exactly what you are searching for. Longer
irons, mid irons and short irons all hit with
a consistency that will bring greater confidence
to your game.
That is the challenge that the Iron designers
are now confronting in the search to bring you
more enjoyment and improved performance for the
average golfer. They have addressed the 3 and
4-iron by replacing them with hybrids, but what
about the rest of the set? So now we have the
emergence of the Hybrid-Irons.
These are clubs that merge
the technology of the Hybrid with that of a
more conventional Iron with the weighting of
that merge (Hybrid & Iron)
swinging more to Hybrid as you go up through
the set and more to Iron as you use the shorter
clubs.
The Tour Edge Bazooka JMax IronWood is the logical
extension of the way that the design is moving.
This club has a Hybrid appearance right through
the set, which is unconventional, but it works.
The lower, deeper CoG means that consistency
is dramatically improved through the set.
Actually the design is real breakthrough, using
2 piece super-thin cast body that allows a massive
120g of weight to be placed in the sole. That’s
design working for you.
The starting point of any decision on golf clubs
though remains your swing and your game. The
nice thing about this technology is that it brings
far greater consistency to your Iron play through
the set. But we first need to make sure that
your problem is consistency and that this technology
will solve or improve it.
Chat to me before you buy a set, my job is to
be your personal golf equipment expert.
Have a great week and good luck to all of you
playing this weekend.
Regards
Duncan
