April 2007
Greetings from Duncan,
Firstly this week I must
congratulate Hele Park’s
Chris Gill and Neil Vaughan on winning the Alliance
at Tiverton on 12 April. Three under from Chris
and a team score of 43 points clinched the victory
by one point.
Congratulations also to
Bill Mitchinson who won the Hele Park Seniors’ Winter League, beating
hot favourite Don Hewitt. The Ladies’ Winter
League was won by Liz Morrish who beat Gina Royffe
in the final.
The PGA National Pro-Am
qualifier was won by Paul McGlinchey with 44
points, cutting his handicap to 5. Paul and
I now go forward to the Regional Final at Saunton
and we’ll let you know
how we get on!
Congratulations continue
as Hele Park’s
Ann Scofield won the Devon County Ladies’ Golf
Association County Bronze Medal at Libbaton at
the weekend. A winning score of nett 70 cut her
handicap from 23 to 21.
This week’s newsletter
focuses on iron technology. The Mizuno MX900
iron set has hybrid long irons to get the desired
high trajectory with soft landing long iron
approach shots, and cavity short irons to give
you maximum forgiveness. This technology is
also available in the Nicklaus iron max set.
We also feature the Srixon
Z-URS balls which combines low spin off the
driver but exceptional spin off the wedges. This
ball has won many professional golf competitions
and is available at Hele Park Pro Shop.
Best wishes
Duncan

YOUR IRONS LOOK LIKE WHAT?
Have you made a decision on what you want out
of the next set of Irons? Better still, have
you decided what you want them to look like?
And just how important are looks when you compare
them to results?
Efforts to make the long iron an easier club
to use along with advances in materials and manufacturing
methods have given us the hybrid. So the loft
might be the same and the shaft length (ought
to be if it is replacing your long iron) is the
same, but this is NOT an Iron by any stretch
of the imagination.
For those who want to have
a club that at least pays its respects to the
tradition of an Iron design there is the so
called ‘Hybrid Iron’.
Yes, these look something like an Iron but their
soles are very broad (allowing the weight to
be dropped low and deep) and their top lines
are thick (to give you confidence at address
and to extend the size of the sweet spot).
Then we have over-sized heads. This pulls weight
to the extremes making the club much more stable
at impact and increasing the size of the sweet
spot.
Finally, we work through
a number of variations of cavity backs, extreme
cavities, deep, undercut cavities – in fact quite enough cavity
types to occupy a Wednesday afternoon Dentist’s
School on the golf course – on to Muscle
Backs and finally ‘Blades’.
Now which one is best for you? Call me and let
me help you play with the right Iron Design.

AMONGST THE PRIZES
I often talk about the need to make sure that
you are properly fitted when you buy new golf
equipment.
With the emergence of so many different technologies
it is also very important to make sure that the
design of a golf club best suits your game and
your requirements.
That might mean a Driver
from one manufacturer, the Fairway Woods from
another, Hybrids & Irons
from another and a set of specialist Wedges.
So I have put together a whole bag of prizes
from Drivers right through to a Powakaddy to
drive the whole lot around the steepest golf
course.
So, get your entry in, as soon as possible and
let's see if we can get some winners.
AND STILL THE GOLF BALL GETS BETTER
I told you golf balls would continue to improve.
And here are the next improvements from Srixon,
who have proved themselves to be a leader in
golf ball design.
For those of you that don’t want to pay
out the price of a Tour Premium golf ball but
do want to have a combination of feel, control & spin
and distance all in one golf ball there is the
new Srixon Tri-Speed.
What makes this ball special is the combination
of design features: Distance is delivered through
Srixon’s proprietary core, which will provide
maximum energy transfer through a wide range
of swing speeds along with a higher launch angle
and low spin launch conditions. Distance is further
increased by the mid-layer (of this 3pce-ball
that seeks to increase ball speed
The exceptionally soft feel that will also give
you maximum control around the green and off
the putter comes from the soft Rabalon blended
cover.
For those of you, with a good swing speed, who
want the softest possible feel and the ‘spin
features’ to allow you to take maximum
shot-making control from your short-game and
approach shots, the Srixon Z-URS has just got
better.
This ball has an ultra-soft, ultra-thin (0.5mm)
urethane cover (the softest that Srixon has ever
created).
But because this allows the proprietary Srixon
core to be even larger, more energy can be translated
to create faster ball speed at impact time.
This ball also comes with the high trajectory
330 dimple pattern that will provide a strong
and penetrating trajectory in all wind conditions.
Try out one of these golf balls and experience
just how soft they feel. For me that is the best
step forward we have seen in the new releases:
we are getting softer golf balls with exceptional
feel that don’t give up any distance.
Have a great week and good luck to all of you
playing this weekend.
Regards
