Greetings from Duncan,
Welcome to this
week’s
Hele Park Newsletter.
Hele Park was
the venue for the Devon County Ladies’ League
Finals featuring teams from Downes Crediton,
Okehampton, Portmore and Wrangaton Golf Clubs.
A nail-biting finish saw Okehampton finally
take the title, beating runners up Wrangaton.

Everybody had a great day, despite the weather,
and we have had great feedback from everyone
who attended.

What's Your Personal LSI Index?
Golf
shoes that help you hit the ball further? I’m not sure why everyone snorts
at this claim. The greater your stability, the
harder you can swing at the ball with more control.
That’s what Dr Paul Hurrion from Quintic
Sports Science Consultancy used as the basis of
his theory with Padraig Harrington.
The biomechanical fact that they established (we
could have told them after watching members with
worn spikes slipping around on the 1st Tee), was
that there is a measurable link between the amount
of time a player’s centre of gravity continued
towards the target and energy efficiency and accuracy.
They, the scientists, not us on the 1st Tee, called
it “a Longitudinal Stability Index (LSI)”.
The higher the index, the further and straighter
the ball went. Comparative testing with a 5-iron
showed that Padraig Harrington in bare feet had
an LSI rating of 65%, in a traditional golf shoe
an LSI of 78% and with the Hi-tec CDT Power Padraig
achieved an LSI of 94%.
If we can all understand that shoe designers are
putting great effort into the design of the outsole
and the way that your foot is held stable in the
shoe to create stability, why do we never change
the spikes?
I’m not sure what the “traditional
shoe” was, but that’s a major improvement
and translates into big improvements in both accuracy
and distance. In fact for Padraig it has coincided
with an increase from 288 yards to 320 yards on
average Driving stats. Padraig doesn’t credit
it all to the shoes (his ball and club sponsors
want some of the credit) but he is clear that the
ball travels further because he gets more clubhead
and ball speed from his stable stance.
My view. I’ve always said when buying golf
shoes “comfort is non-negotiable, but then
you are looking for stability and traction for
a solid platform to launch the ball”. Take
your time choosing golf shoes: check the waterproof
guarantee, check the fit and comfort and then make
sure the stability and traction that they will
provide is good enough for you.
If you want a tour of a golf shoe with an explanation
of how the individual parts help with your stability
and traction then come through to the golf shop.
Waterproof,
Comfort & Stability
The Footjoy Xdimension shoes have a number of performance
and comfort features that you don’t expect
to see at this price point. In fact I am very
tempted to say that this is the best value golf
shoe on the market.
Extra comfort is delivered via a special Footjoy
waterproofing system – InteliShieldTM - that
has a ‘smart’ membrane that allows
the shoe to expand and constrict as required, allowing
vapour to escape while retaining total waterproof
protection. This provides you with a shoe that
works for both winter and summer (or the foreign
holiday in January).
That is on top of the Footjoy Laser Last that is
designed to provide you with a superior fit to
start with.
People often question price. Well see if you can
find another shoe with so much at our price.
The Rubber outsole (DuraMaxTM) and moulded EVA
mid-sole along with the Black WidowTM cleats by
SoftspikesTM provide serious stability and traction.
